Well the 3DS successo as a stand alone device is:
1. Almost guaranteed to perform worse then the 3DS.
2. Be rather traditional in design (the home console has more possibilities)
3. People care about home consoles more then they do handhelds.
Look at the poor support the 3DS has in its 5th year (outside of Japan). The dedicated gaming market is dying and only a few core devs are keeping it relevant in the west (Nintendo, Square Enix, Capcom etc).
