You summed up my answer in the first 3 words of your post

Maybe, but definitely not at the level they were before Sony came onto the scene.

nintendo shouldnt change their core philosophy when it comes to game development and stuff. if being mainstream involves making them more like sony or microsoft or ea or activision or ubisoft.. then i think we can all safely say that it is a bad idea... and stuff and junk.

I think the NX will be a titan, yeah.

From April 1990-March 1995, Gameboy+SNES shipped 77.11 million

From April 2011-March 2016, 3DS+Wii U will have shipped 72.06 million

Nintendo is in roughly the same spot they were during the 5 year period before Sony came onto the scene.

Not all of us.

I don't think it would be a bad idea at all if they became more like Sony in terms of hardware design, marketing, diversity of genres. But hey, that's just me, looking at PS4's sales versus Wii U's.

I don't quite feel Ninten is mainstream these days, and somewhat doubt that can become mainstream, at least not right away. The PS and XB brands are so strong now those are the mainstream consoles now. I figure the standard comment it to "play some Playstation (or Xbox)" while Nintendo is probably that 3rd console that general audiences probably don't care much about except Nintendo fans and more core people.

It could happen with NX, but they'll really have to win people over with it, and with how strong the PS4 is going, that is going to achieve.

Mobile is way more 'mainstream' than handheld and consoles, so they will not in the same sense, if you get what I mean..

Doesn't matter to me though, as long as they make good games and consoles, that's all I really care about..

If Nintendo is not as mainstream as Playstation or Xbox then why the 3DS is the best seller system (home or handheld) of this generation? I live in a little town in Mexico and my friends, nephews and myself have both the Wii U and 3DS, I think my neighbourgh has a PS4 but I'm not exactly sure. My point is: Nintendo is still mainstream, the thing is PS and Xbox are mainstream as well and now the three brands are recognizable and in the past just Nintendo was (nobody here knew 3DO or Neo Geo and they barely knew Sega, everything was "a Nintendo") but nowadays because of internet or globalization or whatever other brands are recognizable as well.

Not unless they solve the lack of content/diversity problems that plagued the Wii U. A significant majority of gaming consumers are not going to give up on the large number of third-party games that release every year. That's just not going to happen.

Either they change as a company--and I'm not sure they can or even want to change--or they content themselves with being niche. The big negative with being a niche hardware company is that a lack of growth can lead to a lack of new consumers long term, which is very not good. It will eventually result in a consumer base that is made up of older, die-hard fans (if it isn't already) which will shrink naturally as time passes. That's why Nintendo wasn't exactly happy that these die-hard fans were the ones buying up Amiibo instead of kids. They need turnover and growth more than they need raw sales.

A shared hand-held/home library could make a dent but it still won't solve the problem, especially when there is a lot of overlap to begin with.

They could possibly hit another hardware gimmick/innovation homerun and all their problems will be solved. It wouldn't surprise me if they bet everything on that.
