Forums - Nintendo - A biased review: Darksiders 2 (Wii U)

I think it would be a 7 without the technical difficulties and with more polish, but the Wii U version can't be recommended.

The first game was closer to Zelda, Darksiders 2 added a Diablo like loot system. A problem is that you get so many weapons to "feed" your possessed weapons that they're overpowered quickly.

Got it for $9 from the eshop a year or so ago. I regret having it on my menu but I need something to justify my external HDD purchase.

Oddly enough, this game's tearing was less noticeable and non-existent for me when: 1. Playing on the GamePad only 2. Use a PC monitor.

The combat i thought was pretty fun. I have to agree that a few special moves you buy from that Dwarf guy never seem to execute but the ones that do worked great. The best combos usually end up being repetitive and spammy but feel natural in combat. The hook shot grab you obtained in a dungeon was pretty damn good too.

A lot of the bosses were fun to kill though and there were some moments where you can tackle additional optional dungeons that dropped powerful weapons. This was one thing that was done really well to make the overworld less lifeless since you had to go off the beaten path to find them.

But speaking of dungeons, the puzzles are sometimes incredibly horrible. Very few clues to tell you what a weight button activated when there are multiple ones in a room. This was a major problem when a room is incredibly big and part of it is blocked from your peripheral or wall platforming. Zelda, on the otherhand presents the situation clearly to you most of the time or makes the room at least easy to explore.

Story was horrible and seemed less interestig than the first according to the wikia page and made the game feel like it went forever. And each nrew region got smaller and smaller for some odd reason. The voice acting was really good though.

The loading took forever sometimes as well.

Surprising enough, many sites gave it a decent score.

Yeah, that's always the strange thing about third party games on Nintendo consoles. Either reviewers are seriously that incompetent or they are being paid off.

Why do you assume this? Occam's Razor: they never bother to play the Nintendo version and just copy the review for the 360 game.

I love Darksiders II, but the graphic on Wii U is really lame, lots of jaggies...

I think you went wrong when you reviewed the game expecting it to be a Zelda game. It's its own thing and saying graphics are bad on a last generation games is uninspired. The graphics were fine when it released.

It is an average game though. But i would rate it on the 7/10 instead because at the end of tge day its a very meaty and fun game.

I didn't expect a Zelda game. I mentioned Nintendo's IP because Darksiders 2 takes obvious clues from it and that in turn saves me the trouble to describe portions the gameplay. The same goes for Prince of Persia, so I could focus on the aspects that are more unique to Darksiders 2 in my review.

You can't defend the graphics of this game. The framerate's instability has a very notable impact on the enjoyment of the game. Also, we are way past consoles that had limited color palettes. More diversity wouldn't have hurt the game.

You have been spoiled by more recent games. That kind of FPS was normal a few years back (during 360 and PS3 era). Though i didnt play the Wii U version, so i don't know if its worse. Also, if i recall these FPS dips were when entering a new area or saving, wich even today happen on some games still (for example even Fallout 4 chugs while saving today). Unfortunely these are things that will only go away as the hardware gets better and better.

But yes, the game takes clear inspirations from Zelda, PoP and God of War/Devil may cry. But its an interesting mix.

I have been spoiled by older games as well. Just because third parties on the whole were incompetent during the 360 and PS3 era doesn't mean that it should become an acceptable standard. The Wii U version has a terribly instable framerate and I am and wasn't refering to dips that happen while the game is streaming new data into the RAM.

Oh, i totally agree. I hated the FPS drops. Just saying that it happened alot. And if we rip on this one we are gonna have to rip on all of them. My point is more that it wasnt an isolated case. But yes, i despise fps drops. Much prefer less objects/fidelity for a smoother experience.
