Forums - Nintendo - StarFox Zero possibly delayed to July 2016?

People who think Nintendo can seriously support the Wii U on top of even just a portable NX are in for a rude awakening.

They can't even finish a Star Fox game that looks this low budget anywhere near on time. At E3 2014, Miyamoto said this game would be ready in about a year, it will be over a year late.

Which personally I'm fine with, but the idea that they can support two high-end platforms going forward when virtually every single Wii U game they've published has encountered significant delays ... c'mon guys, the writing is not only on the wall here it's in bright neon pink.

NX has to significantly alter the Nintendo platform structure, they simply cannot continue like this, if they are choking on Wii U development, they are going to absolutely die with a PS4 level console, which is why I suggest simply letting the "big box" home console NX handle big third party ports while Nintendo games should just be (basically) Wii U-complexity engines just souped up to 1080P + 60 fps + 4X AA.

Things like Star Fox and Yoshi's Wooly World take forever, but really epic scale HD titles like Xenoblade X are ridiculous (3 1/2+ years of development) and Zelda U (will be nearing what ... 4-5 years in development this fall?).

Having into account the amount of games Platinum is working on, there's no surprise the delays. Didn't Scalebound and Nier get delayed too?

You know it deserves the GOTY.

that seems crazy. that's 3 months on top of the near 6 month delay to begin with. I think they may be giving themselves unreasonable deadlines to begin with. that's 9 months for star fox, and what's starting to appear to be 1 year for zelda. They may be starting to overestimate their talent. The only excuse i can think of is they are spreading themselves thin with nx game development. Which is a bummer for me since i don't game on hand-helds and am still skeptical on a 2016 home console.

I don't think it's fairly obvious Nintendo has gone as far as they can with the old home console + handheld model.

NX is going to have to create a completely hardware model with a unified library as one of its new pillars.

They can't be supporting distinct, individual software libraries like this ... imagine a Nintendo portable that's as powerful as a Wii U ... and then a Nintendo console that's like the PS4.

They would forever to release anything. It just can't keep going like this.

Even Splatoon, the only reason they were able to get that out in any kind of reasonable time frame was because they basically launched it with like 30% of its content missing.

there could be a number of reasons for the delays. when miyamoto said that, it probably was possible to finish it within a year, but isnt he working on other projects too? you dont know what is going on behind the scenes.

In this case they should spread that approach on another titles. Release Star Fox Zero in November and provide monthly content for the game.

I'm sure that Platinum is working on too many games at once (Starfox, ScaleBound, Nier...) to be allowed to release on schedule. But Soundwave is right, Nintendo is still very slow when developing HD games, so putting all of their eggs in the same basket will be the only way to give that basket enough value.

Did Star Fox Zero even have a confirmed European release date beyond "2016"? Or was it just 'April' 2016?

In the absence of a specific date, European retailers could just be guessing. A UK based site (base.com) currently have Star Fox Zero pegged for June 24th, while gamecollection (another UK site) have 22nd April down.

they have released a lot of their other games on target. i cant think of many other games that had delays off the top of my head? and they still come out with a lot more games per year over any other publisher. if not, they are an easy top three in terms of quantity.

I was expecting this to happen. First Zelda U, now Starfox Zero. Like people previously in the thread have said, after E3 we'll be seeing the run up to NX being released. It's almost undoubtable the game is going to be either a dual-release or going to turn into an NX launch title.

I honestly doubt that it's been delayed due to development issues. The game itself looks like a budget PS2 release from about 2005, and apart gameplay is virtually unchanged since Lylat Wars/Starfox 64. If it has been delayed due to technical or creative difficulties, it may end up taking as long as the last game which was delayed over and over again due to creative and engine changes...
