The Dreamcast didn't die because of the PS2. The device was doomed due to the finantial situation of Sega at the time and a lot of bad decissions since the Genesis era, the PS2 just put the final nail in the coffin. It it weren't for that, it could have sold the same as the Gamecube or the XBox. Also, precedent is not enough to guarantee that something will happen. There are an infinity of factors that will affect the NX that weren't even around during the 6th gen, and the other way around.

But if Nintendo can't overcome enough of those factors, the NX would fail, they'd likely stop making games, and the industry itself would be horrendous.

No. Even with this generation being the weakest for Nintendo, the company still earns money. They can afford to have smaller userbases than the competition due to their insane attach rates. And with them working on a single architecture, they will be able to concentrate their userbase and offer a stronger product.

Also, een if it fails, why would a multimillion dollar company would stop working on their best products just because one of them failed?

I don't see why the PS4 would have a 5 year lifecycle. A 2020 release date seems more likely.

Because if the NX is successful, then Sony will get wind of it and release the PS5 right away in 2018, just like they did with the PS2 to kill the Dreamcast.

Unless they fear that the NX will become the next Wii, or if the XBox is coming soon, they won't. The PS4 is cheap to produce, sells gangbusters and it gets all 3rd party. Just throw all that out the window because of the NX wouldn't be sound.

Even if it is a portable, it will compete directly. It's a dedicated hardware for game and people don't have infinite money.

A 5 year cycle was always the expected for ps4, given it's hardware.

Ps4 might be selling the best this gen but it isn't doing gangbusters. And you seem to be ignoring that a new competitor will affect ps4 sales in a bad way.

Even if Nx is somewhat successful, you really think sony will drop out the ps4 who will be at more than 55 millions at the end of 2016 ?

It's sony, not nintendo or microsoft.

Ps5 won't come before 2020, i can bet on it.

The PS4 was designed to be profitable. The hardware isn't that expensive, they earn money with each unit sold, the software sales are great, the console sells consistently well, the PS4 also doubles as a platform for all of the Sony services... After the finantial drain that was the PS3, Sony wants to stay in the green as much as possible. It's a very safe machine, and they would be risking a lot of that safety if they unnecesarily shorten its lifespam.

And unless the NX becomes a new Wii, the PS4 will continue to sell well. Realistically, the western studios won't be as enthusiastic as the fans when it comes to the NX, and they will keep the PS4 as their main platform. And those games are the main system sellers nowadays. Sony would be more scared of a new XBox than the NX.

If NX is a home console and sells well, it will reduce ps4 AND ps5 sales. I'm not saying sony should rush a ps5 to the market in that situation, but they won't have the luxury to wait longer than 2018 or else the NX would get a huge lead.
