People here state that a resolution of 480p would be too low but they forgot that (among other reasons) Vita failed because it was "too powerful" for the market, games had to be made with high graphics (for a handheld) that caused increased prices... Imho I don't know if Nintendo should make it's screen more than 480ish (depending on what they need for downscaling graphics...)

Have you looked at the mobile market?

There are $50 devices being released with 720/1080p.

No excuses this time. The market has evolved too much to only give 480p on a $200 device

Handheld should be 720 (possibly 540) minimum.

As for 1080p 60fps for ALL games? Hahahahahahahahahaha won't happen, that would mean a very expensive and powerful console (not exactly nintendo's style)

I wonder who manufactures the Vita LCD (540p) screen, wouldn't be shocked if Ninty straight up makes a deal with Sony for NX...

Anyway, if NX uses that unified library theory, it will attract big third parties, but unlike 3ds and past HHs, the baseline HH will have to be powerful enough, to play current games at least 540p. As long as the NX HH gets all the games, then the NX home console (now optional/luxury) can be whatever Ninty wants, and yes, even more powerful than PS4.

Has mobile tech advanced enough for Nintendo to release a high end portable, powerful enough to receive current gen games (at lower res)? If so, what is a realistic price point? Nintendo can easily release a no frills, $299 home console that beats PS4, but again, the big question is about the powerful of the baseline/handheld.

Probably not, no. I don't think Nintendo hits the 1080p/60fps mark as a standard. I don't think the NX home will be as powerful as even the X1.

Why not!? We can say that 720p/60fps is standard for Wii U because most of Wii U games works at 720p/60fps and we even have Smash Bros that running at 1080p/60fps, so they probably will go for 1080p/60fps with NX home console same they go for 720p/60fps with Wii U.

Nope.

Most games won't support 1080p 60FPS, because developers rather push graphics which has a bigger impact on the overall picture than a bump in resolution. On top of that there are a lot of games where 60 FPS isn't really necessary, so again they would rather increase the world detail.

1080p 60FPS could've been the standard since 360 and PS3. But developers chose to not simplify their games only to reach that target (with a few exceptions such as Virtua Tennis 4 or NBA Street Homecourt).

Well Nintendo will probably go 1080p/60fps for their games same they go 720p/60fps with Wii U.

When we talking about handheld resolution anything from 480p to 720p is possible, but I think they will go for 540p same like Vita.
Nintendo will probably go for 1080p/60fps game for NX home console beacuse they went for 720p/60fps for Wii U.

You already start wrong by saying NX will be two things. The handheld prediction is not gonna happen, 540p is the minimum and 720p the maximun (480p would actually be more expensive). I think they will go for a single big foldable screen at one of those resolutions (probably 720p). whatever console replaces wii u will easily have a 1080p 60 fps standard, maybe 1440p on "4k"/2160p tvs. I don't think any 9 gen console will achieve 4k consistently without sacrificing graphics and framerate unless it releases late (2019+) or at a very high price.

I've looked at the mobile market, from a gaming standpoint, it doesn't make sense to make a 720p device if 98% of the games on mobile devices look like 360p or lower and the other 2% are racing games that aren't free to play.

Nintendo will have as it's only competitior the Steam Boy (which I predict will bomb SOOOOOOO HARD) and the Steam library is the one that is the most similar to mobile libraries: there's a lot of games, shure, but MOST of them play and look as absolute garbage, Nintendo instead with a low-medium screen will keep offering it's high profile games with extremely good quality that gives sense to the price of the game.

More like, why? The PS4 and X1 struggle to achieve that now, there's on a handful of titles that do, and even with optimization and familiarity with the hardware, this may be a benchmark that is only achieved regularly at the latter end of the generation. So why would Nintendo shoot for a standard that even its competition isn't really acheiving? What's the benefit? If they want the NX to be successful, it has to be affordable, and by that I mean so much cheaper than a PS4/X1 that people will practically impuse buy it. If you want an affordable console, it means it has to have cheaper hardware, and that means less power.

I don't care if Smash Bros pulled it off on the Wii U. Gran Turismo also pulled it off on the PS3, yet it's still a challenge for the PS4 to pull it off. Just can pull it off in this one game, with this one particular engine, and this one particular graphics style that lends itself to less complicated rendering so that the resources are available to actually achieve this does not mean mean that this should be something that Nintendo should strive to achieve for every game

Have "ALL" games run @1080p/60fps...hm, what exactly does that mean? For example, you need AMD Fury X to run GTA V with very high settings in 1080p@60fps...that's GPU that is some 3-4x faster than PS4's GPU.

As much as I would love to see them make NX that powerful, I somehow doubt they will go berserk with their next console.

Did you know consoles do a lot more than PCs with a lot less?

The consensus is that vita failed for a lack of games. high price and overpriced obligatory memory cards didn't do any favors for it either.

Expensive and powerfull console? ps4 does 1080p 30fps standard (sometimes 60fps) and will be 3-4 years old when wii u is replaced. 1080p 60fps is a given. The only 30fps games will be the ones that don't benefit from the extra framerate.

Smash Bros isn't demanding though.

Try a game such as GTA or fallout at 1080p@60FPS. You'd need a $1000+ PC just to do that.

thinking nintendo can make all games 1080p@60FPS just because of Smash Bros is naive
