Forums - Gaming - Undertale is a NES era type game? I don't get it. How is it game of the year for many of you?

Yes it could have been on a SNES...
Yes its a game of the year.
Theres more to games than graphics.

Devil's Third looks great... but its not winning any game of the year awards.

Undertale: The Weirdest Earthbound Spiritual Successor Ever

Well personally, I actually find good ol' 8 bit graphics quite charming, but besides that, the game features a rather interesting combat system, a pretty engaging story, a colorful cast of characters, and an amazing soundtrack.

It's one of those games that you really need to play to truly understand why it's amazing, but of course, it won't be everyone's cup of tea.

"Just for comparison Uncharted 4 was 20x bigger than Splatoon 2. This shows the huge difference between Sony's first-party games and Nintendo's first-party games."

People that liked EarthBound/Mother Series, will love it.

I feel like I have already said it so many times already, but sure, I'll say why I loved it. Excellent music, great characters, witty dialogue, interesting and unique battle system, and greatly 4th wall breaking. Just overall excellently made. Definitely better than soccer with cars ; )

Rocket League. I think he might be referring to how that won Indie Game of the Year at TGA over Undertale.

Because graphics aren't what makes a game great. I haven't played Undertale yet, but from what I understand the story and the way the world works in the game is what makes it great.

You don't get the good thing of this game just by watching a couple of videos, you need to play it

Undertale certainly has some unique qualities to it, but if I were to recommend it to someone I would describe it as an "experience" rather than an RPG. I put it in the same category as No More Heroes or Deadly Premonition, in were the character/story is funny and wacky but is lackluster compared to other games of the genre. Not to say that Undertale is a bad game, but if you don't end up liking the characters and story you are not going to get much from the gameplay.

If you do end up buying the game, go in with no expectations, Don't buy into the hype or negativity surrounding the game.

I haven't played it but if it is anywhere as near as good as Earthbound it deserves to get recognition. It probably won't but I'd like to see it on the Nintendo eshop some day. I played Earthbound on VC last year and I absolutely loved it. 1 of the best games I played that year.

My favorite game this year is probably Super Mario Maker and I love those super mario world graphics used.
