Which system will be replaced first, the 3DS or the WiiU?

The 3DS family. 63 39.38%

The WiiU. 40 25.00%

Both will be replaced sim... 43 26.88%

The Game Boy Micro will r... 14 8.75%

Total:160

if NX is both handheld and home console, then it is better to replace both at the same time. and it would be good to market both at the same time as a single concept since both have the same games if NX is really all about fusion.

Replacing the Wii U too soon mean releasing a mid generation console and that's much harder.

I wouldn't worry about the "mid generation console" idea. You could argue that the wii u was mid generational and that the NX is a late start to current gen (especially since the NX won't follow the "wii" brand name)

I don't know, the PS4 is in full force now and a I don't think the market is ready for a new home console now. It seems risky to me.

Too bad Nintendo has given up on Wii U marketshare. If they had dropped the price they could have sold Wii Us for at least two more full years. But the situation is not easy as they had to return to profits.

Market share is very important, but knowin Nintendo (super conservative) they are more concerned with profits not marketshare.

since they haven't focused on marketshare, they are left with a riskier console launch, but it's better than riding out the Wii u any longer (especially so given the wii u specs)

Riding on the Wii U longer would mean being able to launch the new handheld, make what it take to make it successful and then only care about launching a home console. Launching a new console is always risky.

Killing the Wii U early may not please all the one who buy the Wii U and who are the core of Nintendo fanbase. But the first reason is the best, Nintendo can't launch two consoles at the same times and 3DS sales are declining.

I do agree the 3ds will be replaced first, but that's because the 3ds launched earlier and the next handheld had a huge jumpstart over the wii u successor.

As for the core of Nintendo fanbase, they already got mario kart, smash bros, and sequels to known ip: xenoblade, star fox (quality aside), and pikmin. This is what the core fanbase should have expected given the Wii u sales early on.

IMHO it makes more sense to launch them at the same time (if they can provide enough software for both of them):

  • One big marketing campaign for both products is more efficient than two smaller ones.
  • Nintendo needs a successful launch with impressive adoption rate to get the gaming press on their side. With 2 different products sharing the same platform, the adoption rate will be higher (some people prefer home consoles, others prefer handhelds) than with separate launches
  • neither handheld fans nor home console fans will be pissed that they have to wait longer for "their" system
  • if there are some connectivity features between both devices, you don't have to wait for the second device to try them out
  • Nintendo could offer a bundle of both, many Nintendo fans would buy it

You should think about the manufacturing issues that Nintendo would face if they had decided to launch both devices at the same time. Besides you're supposing that the handheld and the home console are in some way different interaction of the same device. What I don't think it'll be the case. They may share the OS and some games may be available for both system, but I think Nintendo will release them as two distinct devices. They'll replace 3DS first, then Wii U. Japan will go nuts over a new handheld.

Prediction : The NX is Nintendo fused with Xbox (Microsoft). Much like the Nintendo PlayStation of old, this will be a joint effort. The handheld component will launch in 2017, and the home console will be the next home device from both Nintendo and Microsoft, called the fusion launching in 2020. Boom.

that would be cool but...

gir?

This is actually a hard question, but I'll be a bit bold and say the 3DS.

Bet with Teeqoz for 2 weeks of avatar and sig control that Super Mario Odyssey would ship more than 7m on its first 2 months. The game shipped 9.07m, so I won

Wii U, because 3DS is pretty important to Nintendo right now.

In every NX discussion I've read, there is a common debate: people arguing which system of theirs they need to replace first. The 3DS is reaching 5 years old, and it seems that Nintendo's output for the system is slowing down quicker than the WiiU's. But even now the 3DS sales are still healthier than WiiU's in both hardware and software (this year the 3DS sold around 7m units, while the WiiU sold around 3m). However, with the NX project closing in, it's very possible that Nintendo will replace both, if the NX is a fusion system.

Which system do you think will be replaced first? The 3DS or the WiiU? Or will they be replaced at the same time by the Fusion system?

Also, if you want to make predictions about which system will be replaced first or last, feel free to make them here.

3DS Pros to replaced last /WiiU cons to replaced first.

-The 3DS keeps selling better than the WiiU. Both hardware and software.

-The 3DS is still getting more 3rd party support than the U (not counting indies, they are coming to both devices).

-Nintendo might not want to ruin their biggest money font without any failsafe plan.

-Nintendo needs to recover the lost ground on the home console market as soon as possible by releasing a new HC devce.

3DS Cons to replaced first/WiiU pros to replaced last.

-The 3DS is dangerously underpowered, and it's missing a lot of 3rd parties because of that.

-The 3DS is an older system. The N3DS didn't help that much.

-The WiiU gets more 1st party support than the 3DS.

-Nintendo needs to preserve the handheld market's health by releasing a new HH device.

With yo-kai watch 3, dragon quest xi, Monster Hunter Stories and a new pokemon game, i don't think Nintendo is going to replace the 3ds in 2016. Most likely the wii u.

It makes no sense to release a new handheld now.  The 3DS has sold more than the PlayStation 4 and is the winner of this generations video game systems.  I am not insulting Sony or Microsoft I respect them all.  The 3DS might be no where near the PS4 or XBOX One in power and graphic capability, but it still is powerful enough to play Wii games with the new version.  It doesn't need the power of the VITA for example as it has 3D, which is why it is so amazing.  It's 3D capabilities make it so marketable.  It has done so well that it doesn't need to be replaced for years to come.  The DS line was around for at least 6 years right?  So expect the 3DS to stay at least 2-3 more years.
