Forums - Nintendo - 3DS is so powerful it can run Windows

Windows 95

- GATEMP user shutterbug2000 apparently got a 3DS to run Windows 95

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nu3_X6HcVrI

- he explains how he did it:

So, if you want to know how I did it while I'm getting everything ready, I'll explain it.

Back a while ago, I tried compiling the dosbox from libretro, and using retroarch to emulate dosbox. Yet, every time, it froze on a rainbow glitchy mess. So, I gave up for a while.

Until tonight.
So, I tried it on my n3ds, and it just worked. So, I think the o3ds just isn't powerful enough to run dosbox, or there's not enough ram.

So, that's how this all got started. At it's core, this is just libretro/retroarch dosbox. But I figured, hey, everyone want's Windows on their 3DS, right?

Nintendo is selling their IPs to Microsoft and this is true because:

MLG 3DS more powerful than PS4 and Nvidia SHIELD combined XD

So the N3DS can run DosBox? That's interesting. What if Nintendo pushed a modified DosBox emulator on the N3DS to sell old DOS games?

You know it deserves the GOTY.

Congratulations... the PSP could run Windows 95 since 2008

To be fair the N3DS hardware is probably older than that.

Still can't beat my PC though. It can run Windows XP! BURNED!

Windows 95 is a TWENTY YEAR OLD OS. Your 2015 toaster oven can probably run Windows 95 easily.

Here are the Windows 95 specs. Note it requires 4 MEGA (not Giga) bytes of memory - your Xbox or PS 4 have 2000 times more mem than WIndows 95 needs. Don't know about DS but I suspect it exceeds the Windows 95 requirements hundreds of times over.

System requirements for installing Windows 95:

  • Personal computer with a 386DX or higher processor (486 recommended)
  • 4 megabytes (MB) of memory (8 MB recommended)
  • Typical hard disk space required to upgrade to Windows 95: 35-40 MB The actual requirement varies depending on the features you choose to install.
  • Typical hard disk space required to install Windows 95 on a clean system: 50-55 MB The actual requirement varies depending on the features you choose to install.
  • One 3.5-inch high-density floppy disk drive
  • VGA or higher resolution (256-color SVGA recommended)

That's pretty amusing to see.

"Just for comparison Uncharted 4 was 20x bigger than Splatoon 2. This shows the huge difference between Sony's first-party games and Nintendo's first-party games."

Win95 is based on DOS. Back then DOS was still part of Windows, WinXP changed that for good, being based on the professional WinNT line. Unless, of course, DosBox is used to install Win95 in the first place

Thus, DOSBox isn't actually needed for DOS games if it can run Win95

Win98SE would have been more interesting though, since it's basically Win95++++++
