They promised and reported sales to retailers, not consumers. You think investors give a rats arse what retailers do with the consoles after they bought them?

I guess they care what  happens to the consoles after they reach the retailers because if they are not sold they aint going to order more!

Ask yourself this: if you have excess consoles produced, what do you do? Try to persuade retailers to buy them, pay for them and take them now, or keep them all to yourself? Of course investors care, but as long as they're produced and that's payed for, it's always better to sell them than keep them, its not like they're getting more valuable with time or something.

And while retailers are stuffed, you can shift some of your production to the Elite, and later to a new process, without ever becoming supply constrained, or having to rent the space to keep the consoles yourself.

As long as you're powerful enough to twist their hand, it's always a better deal having retailers hold your stock.
