Why doesn't Sony just release an app that makes PS4 into a dual boot PS4/Steambox, where's the down side? PC gaming and PS4 gaming in one box connected to your TV, for $349. If the exploit is just around the corner beat the jailbreakers to the punch.

1) it would make a vulnerable entrypoint for hackers, ps3 was only ever jailbroken because of otherOS. Even if an exploit is released, they can probably patch it.

2)that would imply in running Steam/gog/cracked PC games. This includes games on PSN and even Sony-funded like SFV.

3)this could make console platforms lose relevance compared to PCs.

Those 3 points exactly^

Just get a PC then. For this price you can do way better than a PlayStation 4  and still read blurays

Buying a PS4 and PC is better than a buying a PS4 that dual boots as a steam box? I don't think so.

The only way console platforms are relevant compared to PC are that you play on TV and console exclusive games. Steambox already negates one of those things. Which just leaves the console exclusive games, that will always remain relevant.

So... you really believe that you could use a PlayStation 4 to run all PC games? :)
It is a mobile chipset in that thing... You need to run an OS on top of that, obviously not Windows but Linux, and then what some custom drivers (same if you reply me that you could "hack" Windows to run on that?

Yah, I believe that if you really want a PlayStation 4 and play PC games, you need both.
The PlayStation 4 is great for one thing: run PlayStation 4 games... Running PC game on that thing would require a lot of trouble.

Not accounting the fact that chances are you could not patch it anymore or you will not be able to use a hack to run your PC games... I mean I can go on and enumerate a lot of reasons why it would be a very poor choice...

Country to what the wannabe PC designers say if you are a serious gamer you are going to spend well over US$1000 on a decent gaming machine

My PC cost me about $750 after tax with my current hardware (including upgrades.) It plays the Witcher 3 at 1080p High (some Ultra settings) 45 - 50fps, Fallout 4 maxed at 55-60 fps, Dragon Age Inquisition maxed at locked 30 fps, Watch Dogs high/very high locked at 30 fps, emulates PS2, Wii, GC games flawlessly, etc, etc.

Here's the hardware:

i5 4690k @ 4.4 Ghz ($210)

r9 280x ($200)

8 GB DDR3 1600mhz ($50)

240 GB SSD ($70)

ASROCK Z97 Motherboard ($90)

1 TB HDD ($45)

Osrock Case ($40)

Corsair 500 W PSU ($20)

Keyboard and Mouse ($20)

Operating System (free, but windows 7 keys can be found for $20)

Today you can buy a PC that outpaces this quite decently for the same price. And my PC already decently outpaces the PS4 by about 30% better performance depending on the application. If i cut out extras (like my HDD or SSD) and went for a cheaper CPU this PC would still perform better than the PS4 for less than $600.

Unless you have MSDN, you just admitted to being a pirate and proved half why so many build costs are wrong (for people that aren't douchebag pirates).

To get a legit version of a current OS it usually costs $100-150.

This only applies for Windows or the Redhat Version of Linux though. Any other Linux distribution and SteamOS (which is based on Linux) are free

A Blue Ray Drive alone will cost you 50 bucks and PS4 controller with the same quality 70$/€. You cant beat something which is massivley produced and aimed at making profit with the software instead hardware espacially when it comes to built quality, so i dont understand why PC gamers in this thread try to downplay it and say you can built a PC for the same money like a PS4.

for 350 bucks the PS4 is an undenaible beastly cheap package if you can also run a PC OS on it, even you must admit it.

- it can play blue ray and DVDs

- it can play physical PS4 games on an offline account

- you get a nice Controller which would otherwise cost 70€, its also possible to plug in USB extansion for having more USB ports

- it has a very compact formfactor try to buy a PC with the same size and built quality

It would be a great secondarry PC in the living room, and if PC games cold run as well on the PS4 it would be a Killer deal.

How do you get to 70$/€ for a controller? Even a wireless Xbox ONE controller for Windows only costs 45-50€/$, and 360 controllers even for just 30€/$. And yes, these are the official ones from Microsoft, not third party knockoffs.

You can build PC which are just as compact as a PS4 with similar product quality. Here's a pretty good one which also includes PSU and a cardreader: https://www.alternate.de/Chieftec/FI-02BC-U3-Desktop-Gehäuse/html/product/1104207?tk=7&lk=8353 It does limit the size of graphics cards however to low profile cards, which are comparatively weak.
