Forums - Nintendo Discussion - A Survey of Nintendo's Critical Reception Through 2015

As 2015 comes to a close, how did Nintendo's new releases compare to previous years?  I went to the review aggregate website, gamerankings.com, and pulled every game published by Nintendo in North America.  In the tables below, I've listed the average review score for each year or console.  Please note that NES and VB titles are not included because they're not tracked at gamerankings.

So they've been consistently solid. For how long they've been at it that's pretty impressive.

Wow, Amiibo Festival, Mario Tennis and Devil's Third are really lowering the score , aren't they ?

The games with the most negative impact were Devil's Third (-1.32), Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash (-0.89), Chibi-Robo Zip Lash (-0.63), Mario Party 10 (-0.61), and Animal Crossing: amiibo Festival (-0.53).  These numbers represent how much the average changes when I include these reviews... i.e. without Devil's Third, the 2015 average would be 75.07% instead of 73.75%.

Obviously, Nintendo has increased software output at the expense of quality in 2015 to address the complaints of software droughts that we have seen in 2013 and 2014. Especially with the delay of Star Fox and Zelda we have definitely seen some Nintendo-pubished shovelware come out (Amiibo Festival and Mario Tennis) and this has brought down their aggregate score.

Normally, I would be more upset about this but given how much Nintendo is struggling right now, I am not really surprised. Nintendo either needs to win back some 3rd Parties or unify their development platforms in the coming years... They can't keep the same output they had in the GCN/GBA pre-HD era without help. A quality HD game simply cannot be put together in less than 2 years (especially an HD game that meets Nintendo's normally high standards) and even portable games are becoming more and more graphically demanding (gone are the days of porting an SNES Mario title and charging $50 for a physical release).

damn, I forgot about Chibi-Robo , thanks God Zip Lash bombed pretty hard (it sold 140k WW according to VGC) , I really hope that's enough for Nintendo to decide that it's a franchise that doesn't appeal to people...

Wow, considering how poorly the Wii U has been doing, score-wise, it hasn't really done that bad at all...

The scores are kind of weird. I figured the Wii and DS would be higher, but the scores are pretty close to each other.

Wii U games have mostly scored decently this year with the exception of Devils Third and Amiibo festival. Ultra Smash and Project Zero had fluctuating scores ranging from good to mediocre.

I have actually enjoyed the series. It needs more love.

Meh, I can't really criticize it since I've never played a Chibi-Robo game but from the gameplay I've seen nothing stood out to me, it looks like another platformer with meh graphics (compared to other Nintendo games) and no innovative gameplay mechanics. plus imho the gaming industry is already full of robot-like characters :v Don't get me wrong, Chibi-robo could be one of the best platformers ever, but if it is it really keeps hidden it's true capabilities, plus if it isn't it's also a waste of talent: a few months ago N posted an interview with the developer of Zip Lash and she listed some of the games she co-directed, just to name a few she worked on Ocarina of Time, Metroid Prime and the original Animal Crossing, you see my point ?
