brain series is just over 30 mil
The Sims, of course. 100M for "The Sims" alone, another 20M+ for other Sim games, esp. SimCity.
Plus, I believe FF is above 80M and GTA above 70M before the release of GTAIV. From SE and Take-2 reports which I believe you can find on Wikipedia.
And then I think things like Madden, FIFA, Tetris and some others are up there.
You can't expect VGC numbers to be complete for all these franchises like they are for current gen Mario sales.

What about the touch generation? Aren't most of those brain training games, and even Wii Fit, part of the touch generation?

very good point, didn't even think about it.. in any case, the mario games from this gen are making good ground on them

The best game this generation is Super Mario Galaxy
Mario Kart Wii is the 2nd best console racer this gen.
Mario Kart DS is the best racer (handhelds or consoles) this gen.
NSMB is the best 2d platformer this gen.
Mario Kart DS is the best handheld game this gen.
Other GR facts:
There are 14 Mario Games this gen.
Compared to that, there are 11 Final Fantasy games, so that is just as milked as Mario.
