I'm from a spanish speaking country and it would be unthinkable for me to go to a big international event and not understand basic english. I honestly thought it was a non official requirement. Smart move indeed anyway.

I was rooting for Colombia but the speech really killed any chances she had to win. The one time I watch the event and this happens, entertainment at it's finest.

Speaking the language could be an advantage when running for these contests, you seem smarter and let the judges experience you directly. It could be unthinkable for you but as you say it isn't a requirement.
