None of the other choices are traditional RPGs so really, imo, it's the only one and should win by default.

JRPG's are not traditional RPG's. Traditional RPG's are played by rules similar to D&D which makes Witcher and the Fallout closer to traditional RPG's in purpose and intent. The only thing JRPG's do like traditional RPG's is use a turn based system. True RPG's are ruled by a DM which challenges player choice in a world their decisions affect. They battle, level up and gain assets while making their mark on that world. JRPG's are generally linear stories, which give you no control over the world and even if they did its slight.

Name me an RPG on NES that predates FF and DW. Because, I'm pretty sure those two games define tradional console RPGs.

Every real RPG's do have DM's, which is just digital game logic ...

Think of it like this, your dungeon master's are just game authors which are just developers when it comes to videogames ...

The reason why he and I believe that those games fall short of being RPGs is due to the fact that there's NO REAL CLASS SYSTEM ...

If you think about it, taking the definition of "role-playing" at face value gives us no meaning when in every game you play a role but there are a few out there who truly understand the deeper meaning behind those words ...

The true definition of "role-playing" is when your player characters can assume distinct "roles" (classes) which serve their own specialized purposes ...

Dungeons and Dragons for the TRS-80, Temple of Apshai, and Odyssey: The Compleat Adventure ...

Just because their not on NES doesn't make them any less of an RPG and console RPGs are just a subset of computer RPGs ...

What? They spelt witcher 3 wrong.

I need a WiiU to play this game though. In all seriousness.

Yup. I bought a Wii-U to play this game and I don't regret it one bit (I just wish they could have explained the game systems a bit better)

Good for them. I swear if it was Bloodborne, I'd throw my PS3 off a cliff...

Why? To justify buying a PS4 to play it?

You know, guys, that's the sub headline as part of the review, not some kind of editorial award.

Exactly. That's just one guy's opinion and the OP makes it sound like Time Magazine handed them an official award or something.

I only copied and pasted a small portion (there's a ton of paragraphs so they went into detail) what was on the article ;o

Didnt put any of my opinions of it since I havent played the game myself so ya I didnt say anythin ;O

Also my RPG of the Year is FFType-0 HD but I aint salty :p

If you didn't put your opinion on the OP them you are against the rules of the site.

But it's just one person claiming that this is the best RPG not the entire magazine unless he is the only one working there.

The title of the thread should be "Time Magazine's reviewer Matt Peckham proclaims the best RPG of 2015 is Xenoblade."

Also i haven't played any of this years RPG's so i don't really care what RPG of the year is.

He's an employee of Time Magazine.

As an employee - he represents his company and before he's even able to submit this review online - he had to go over to someone who's at a higher position than he is such as a Sub/Editor or w/e they call them for news/publications.
He got approval by the company to post his review on THEIR (Time Magazine's) site - not his - so henceforth the title of the thread stays and is correct.

No writer can be said to be the voice of all of Times. And certainly it aint representing any formal award so your answer is completely out. But please say you just like that the missinformation was to your interest and want to keep it like that.

Azzanation: "PS5 wouldn't sold out at launch without scalpers."

Best on WiiU. Now overall I wouldn't pick that one..

...Let the Sony Domination continue with the PS4...

It's pretty even between this and Witcher 3 for me. I really couldn't pick one. I guess this is a bit more unique. There really aren't many open world single player JRPGs.....anywhere.

If we don´t count Bloodborne then i completely agree. Witcher 3 was great aswell but XCX takes the cake. 90 hours in and i still have so freaking much to do that it´s insane. And i still feel like i want to explore, do affinity missions etc whereas i burned out pretty quick from Witcher 3 after i entered Skellige

great choice
