Forums - Gaming - Everyone loves wipeout!

I played a couple of versions of Wipeout, I found them a little dull compared to F-Zero.

I don't like wipeout, it's such an f-zero wannabe

I loved Wipeout 2097 and remember doing ludicrous speed with the piranha. I also got wipeout for the N64 which was OK but 2097 was the best. The video took too long to load for me. Gave up after watching about 20 seconds of jumpy stalling video.

wipeout by far was a better game than fzero in its glory days on ps1. anyone saying its a rip off is just too full of themselves. look at wipeout 2097 on ps1, which release before the n64 fzero. pure masterpiece and much better controls than fzero back then.

Well one of the ones I tried was on PS1 (if there is only one on the PS1 then it was that one you mentioned), and I didn't like the controls at all, this was also before I got F-Zero X.

I just thought all the craft seemed really stiff and just didn't feel right... In fact, if you have F-Zero GX...and you make yourself a heavy craft with high boost, they usually seem to control similarly.

Wipeout is just a poor man's F-Zero

Here's what Metacritic has to say:

 WipEout Series

1. Playstation: WipEout XL (2097) (1996) 93

Psygnosis

2. Playstation: WipEout 3 (1999) 89
Psygnosis

3. Sony PSP: WipEout Pure (2005) 88
Sony Computer Entertainment

4. Nintendo 64: WipeOut 64 (1998) 84
Midway

5. GameCube: XG3 Extreme G Racing (2001) 83
Acclaim

6. Playstation 2: WipEout Fusion (2002) 83
SCEE / BAM! Entertainment

7. Sony PSP: WipEout Pulse (2008) 82
Sony Computer Entertainment

F-Zero Series

1. GameCube: F-Zero GX (2003) 89
Nintendo

2. GameBoy Advance: F-Zero: Maximum Velocity (2001) 86
Nintendo

3. Nintendo 64: F-Zero X (1998) 85
Nintendo

4. GameBoy Advance: F-Zero GP Legend (2004) 77
Nintendo

5. GameBoy Advance: F-Zero Climax (2004) 68
Nintendo

The only F-Zero game not represented is the original F-Zero so take it for what it's worth but obviously WipEout has been the better series critically time and time again with more games created in less time. F-Zero may have created the formula but WipEout perfected it. You can like one over the other, but it's hard to argue that WipEout is a poor man's F-Zero with these kinds of scores. In fact it looks quite the opposite in some cases here. Expect WipEout HD to be more of the same amazing results.

Wow, the Nintendo fanboys are out in full force, that's for sure. F-Zero was an absolutely amazing and innovative game... but it really, really, really does not hold up well to the test of time. Wipeout, Wipeout 2097 and Wip3out were amazing games and I can't wait until HD comes out.

Double blast delivered by Onyxmeth xD I think it looks fantastic, and the series has always done a good job of capturing that feel of speed. I'm probably picking this up :)

From 0 to KICKASS in .stupid seconds.
