Forums - Gaming - Square Enix Exec Quits After Decade At Crystal Dynamics

Darrell Gallagher, boss of Tomb Raider developer Crystal Dynamics, has quit the company.

Gallagher also served as Square Enix's head of product development and western studios, responsible for overseeing all of the publisher's output developed outside of Japan.

Crystal Dynamics veterans Scot Amos and Ron Rosenberg have replaced Gallagher as co-studio heads, positions which the pair have been acting in for "a few months" already.

Nevertheless, Square Enix described the transition as "seamless".

This year Square Enix's western division has published Rise of the Tomb Raider, Lara Croft Go, Life is Strange and Just Cause 3.

But it will be Gallagher's service to the Tomb Raider franchise for which he is most noteworthy.

"I want to thank him for his tremendous effort and contribution to Square Enix, along with the amazing entertainment he has helped create," Square Enix Western CEO Phil Rogers wrote in a statement today.

"I am sad to see him go but respect his decision and we should all celebrate the sheer blood, sweat and tears he has put into our company over the last 10 years!"

Last month saw Rise of the Tomb Raider launch for Xbox One and Xbox 360 to generally positive reviews. PC and PlayStation 4 versions will follow next year.

Guilty for the exclusivity deal that didnt go so well i'm guessing... i still think it was an understandable decision, but it had a big Amercan PoV skewing it. Tomb raider started in europe boys, can't forget that.

While that deal might have gotten them some badish PR if you think about it, Tomb Raider will still launch on all platforms and SE pockets some extra money from MS for making it a holiday exclusive on that platform, I'd imagine that deal could still end up making them some nice money.

The fanbase will significantly decline due to the bad decisions they made with the recent title. Which guess what... Effects future installments. This idea that Microsoft's money made them come out OK is simply being unable to look past your own nose when it has damaged the franchise and likely will effect development of the next game.

Mentioning PC and PS4 helping sales speaks volumes of how poorly the deal has turned out, ultimately making some of what you say contradicting IMO.

Excuse the pun but the fallout has begun.

"Quit"... "His decision"....

Right....

I have to say that I think that this is a casualty of Fallout 4. They needed to launch 2 weeks before Fallout 4 did. Maybe even more.

Sony payed Square Enix to fire the guy. Must get rid of all those non-conformists.

Some of what I say? It was a one line post lol.

I will expand on it slightly tho if you want, if the game hadn't been console exclusive it would have appeared on the PS4/X1/PC at the same time as Fallout 4 was just about to drop too, as well as a number of other really massive AAA+ games, I personally think that sending out anything out during such a quality game packed time was sending it out to die, regardless of platform exclusiveness. If a PC/PS4 gamer had the cash for 1 game at the time when Fallout4 and Tomb Raider (reboot) 2 came out... which one do you think would have a better chance of getting that gamers dosh?

I just think that it would have sold poorly given the competition which it had to deal with during the time frame that it came out.

But now think about the actual legs the game is going to have, A moderately successful launch on the X1 (some potential extra sales here from people happy to have a console exclusive over their PS4 buddies), coupled with the payment from MS for creating the deal for the holiday season, Later on they'll have a launch, I think was it coming to the PC/PS4 in spring of next year, hopefully they'll be able to pick a time when no other AAA game is coming out, possibly title the PC/PS4 versions with "the Definitive edition" like they did with the 8th gen port of Tomb Raider (reboot) Lap up sales from PS4 gamers who want to rub it in the face of X1 fans that Sony gamers ended up getting access to the game anyway! (even if said gamers didn't care for the game and wouldn't have bought it otherwise) and Naturally it'll come to PC where people will buy it to test their rigs against the versions running on either 8th gen system.

See that is the thing... I think while they have drummed up some bad PR, there is a chance that the angst on the internet will cause copies of this game to sell to people who wouldn't have bought it otherwise... especially not had it just launched on their platform of choice in the shadow of Fallout 4.

Oh, after writing this I went back to check, Rise of the Tomb Raider launched the same week as Fallout 4 as mentioned, but also that week Star Craft 2: Legacy of the void launched, The previous week had Call of Duty Black ops 3 and the Need for Speed reboot, the week before that had Halo 5 guardians launch... Seriously I think unless it was the PSVR version of Blowjob simulator, no game was getting a massive launch the week Tomb Raider came out.
