Forums - Sony - Yoshida Shuhei: 'SOCOM 5 not happening any time soon because...'

- the president of Sony Worldwide Studios for SCE said why we shouldn't expect a sequel in the SOCOM franchise any time soon.

- on the possibility of people not knowing what they want, he said:

“In an online game…you know moved on. So much of quality and production values, everything is way, way higher. People have great memories of playing these games many years ago but people’s experiences have moved on as well. So even if they say that they had a great time and they want to experience it again they may not know how much higher their own expectations have become.”

- on the importance of generating interest and their struggle to do just that, Mr. Yoshida said:

“We have to gauge the interest and what they are saying and what they really want to see or play. We have to balance that with what we can do with the number of people who will enjoy that and we don’t have a good answer to that. So it’s a hard one. We made the game. It’s not like we did not liked the game. We are extremely proud of what our teams have accomplished during that days, but we have to balance everything.”

I like that at least it seems Sony has been considering the idea.

Sad. I would really like a new Socom game, even if it was just like the old ones, Yoshida!

Bet with Teeqoz for 2 weeks of avatar and sig control that Super Mario Odyssey would ship more than 7m on its first 2 months. The game shipped 9.07m, so I won

So basically Sony recognizes that people expect more straightforward shooters now and the market for games like SOCOM is probably relatively smaller. Sad but makes sense.

It sounds like an acknowledgement that competing with CoD, Battlefield, and all the other online shooter franchises is a rather meaningless endeavor. Why budget something else for that space when you know it would need massive amounts of resources to even come close to the same level? In an already crowded market place? Not really worth it.

There are enough online shooters. Better to offer games that compliment those experiences and provide variety.

Exactly. Getting another shooter out pose the question of how to make that shooter stand out and will the people even care?

Fairly smart tbh, lots of companies released half assed efforts at stealing some of the money that CoD and Battlefield take in every year, never going to outshine those 2, it's like making an MMORPG to beat WoW, you just gotta wait for the Kings to die sometimes before trying to move in yourself.

Why not check me out on youtube and help me on the way to 2k subs over at www.youtube.com/stormcloudlive

Don't you mean S.O.C.O.M 5?

I feel that way about Halo now. I loved Halo 1-3 and after playing COD for a year or so, I decided I missed Halo too much and got an Xbox One to play the MCC. Much to my surprise, my beloved Halo felt old... very... very... old. What Yoshida is talking about literally happened to me so I know first hand that he's not blowing smoke up our asses. People have found memories about old online games but online gaming has evolved so much since then that it can be jarring to try an have that same level of fun again with an old title.
