Even as someone who liked the first two movies as their own thing, this looks... just not good. o.O I mean, the new movies have pretty much been 'Diet Star Trek Lite' that Michael Bayed everything and pretty much began and ended as a popcorn flick, but I like popcorn flicks, so I enjoyed them. The first movie got quite a bit of leeway from me because, well, brash young Kirk acting brash and young. Second one, I found Benedict (cause that last name 'do,) played a suitably interesting and faintly inhuman Khan to keep the movie on solid enough ground for me. My only real concern is that this will become the only style of Star Trek developed going forward and any possible Star Trek series produced would stick to this universe/style (which would suuuck) but that still kind of remains to be seen.
This movie, on the other hand... yeah, I think this might be going over whatever line I had in my head separating 'Diet Star Trek Lite' from 'Star Trek Fanfiction Mostly Consisting Of BOOMCRASHBANG.' Not sure if it's the music, the jumping two-wheeler, the 'Oh Noes Hanging Off A Cliff', buuuut yeah... this looks like it's pretty much shedding connections to the source material and going Maximum Popcorn. =P Which, fair enough, but I'm likely going to wait and see if it passes through Netflix.
