Forums - Nintendo - So the Wii U did not get an official price cut this Holiday season?

My store has the same ones sitting on the shelves since the black Friday sale went away. How in the hell do they expect to sell any when it is back up at the PS4 price point?

They don't. That is the only logical explanation I can come up with. Nintendo has given up on pushing hardware sales for the Wii U. Next year will be all about showcasing the upcoming Nintendo console. Might get one or two more major titles announced for the Wii U from Nintendo and that's it.

They will get one next year with the nx release

But we have heard rumors that no NX till 2017, if that happens do they really want one More year of poor sales?^

They probably learnt their lesson with the Gamecube when they dropped the price to $99US and it still did not fly off shelves. The profit margin for the Wii U is probably slim due to the expense of the Gamepad and they don't want to take a big loss on each unit sold. They are in a lose-lose situation. Do nothing and the hardware sells poorly. Drop the price and lose profit on the hardware with no certainty of a sales boost.

Suppose they're making $50 profit on each system they sell. If they drop the price by just $20, they have to see a boost in sales of 66% just to make the same profit. Obviously, I haven't factored in the profit from game sales, but at the same time, I also haven't used solid numbers for the amount of profit they get per system... and let's be realistic - they could have the dropped the price by half, and it still isn't going to come close to an average 66% boost in sales.

Nintendo's in this for money, not units sold. They aren't going to convince the third parties to come back to the Wii U, so boosting sales won't help them get more games on the system.

And that's why, rather than dropping prices, they're bundling more.

Agreed, that ship sailed a long time ago.

I think he means Pachter.

OT: As Aielyn has said, Nintendo no longer cares about selling more Wii U consoles, they care about making as much profit as they can. That's why there hasn't been any price cuts.

Nintendo won't risk more money with the WiiU. The next pricecut will be after the release of thhe NX.

You know it deserves the GOTY.

Looking really unlikely and will definitely be after Holiday Season so they can make more money from that

[3DS] Winter Playtimes [Wii U]

This is one area where I think Nintendo have managed to be quite shrewd since the release of the Wii U. I think they realised that it was a sinking ship from quite early and that a price cut would simply not result in a big enough uptick in sales to justify it. Instead they've held the operation steady, and managed to turn an unsuccessful console into a nevertheless profitable one.
