I was thinking earlier about what Nintendo might call the 'NX' product when it gets a public name, and how some names for consoles/add-ons have been kind of bleh like 32X (honestly just a plain bad idea) or Xbox One / WiiU.

Not going to do a poll as it would get possibly too convoluted.

Nintendo has been kind of boring but mostly good. It seems they got more creative as the gens wore on, though I think naming the Wii replacement Wii-U was a mistake.

NES, SNES, N64, Gamecube (cool), Wii (okay), WiiU (lol)

Sega is probably my favorite because they are mostly unique and evocative.

SG-1000 (bleh), Master System (okay), Genesis (very cool), Saturn (nice), Dreamcast (epic)

Sony is highly competent and has stuck to highly sensible if not very exciting naming with PS1/2/3/4

Microsoft's naming scheme is incomprehensible : Xbox, Xbox 360, Xbox One. I think it would have been awesome if they gave unique names to each gen than a kind of muddled system involving numbers but no reasonable sense of order. Imagine :

Xbox

Xbox Titan

Xbox Omega

etc.

NEC was interesting but short lived. Everything was an Engine overseas, and 'Grafx' in the US, until they decided to take that back to JPN for 'SuperGrafx', which I think only got 4 or 5 titles released. Too bad about NEC, it would have been truly interesting to see what they would have done in the 4th gen era and beyond.

Anyway, what are some of your favorites?

Mine in no order : Gamecube, Genesis, Dreamcast, Xbox, Playstation (before they started just naming them 2, 3, 4, which makes sense but is hella boring), and hell even Jaguar sounds pretty sweet.

PS Vita is eh

3DS I thought was a clever name.

XBox One is lol.

I prefer the Xbox One name to Xbox 360. The name scheme follows Windows policy, and the Xbox spans three different Windows ages... The Xbox One is part of the whole "One family, one OS" schtick they have had recently with Windows 10. Onedrive, Onenote, Xbox One... I am surprised a Lumia One hasn't been announced, especially since I am pretty much the MS counterpart of an Apple fan (all my stuff is MS)...

GameCube was a cool name, GBA too, and I believe the Dreamcast had a great name, but PSP, DS, 3DS, Wii no U and NX sound hilarious. They are too oddball for someone who likes short names...

Playstation is bland. It's too much of a mouthful...

Interestingly, OneNote predates all of this by over a decade. It came out in 2002 or 2003 IIRC. OneDrive was ported over from SkyDrive.

Xbox One wouldn't have been nearly as bad if it weren't the 3rd Xbox. I also thought it was the all-in-one strategy that it signified, but I guess it's neither here nor there. If this was a film series people would think it had to be some kind of prank or comedy series. Iron Man. Followed by Iron Man 360! And the third film is Iron Man One!

I like all of Nintendo's console names except for WiiU, which is terrible.

Sega's kind of mixed for me; Genesis sounds great, Saturn... not so much. And Dreamcast kinda sounds like some pro fishing rod to me (I still like the name though).

Always liked the name Playstation; never liked the name Xbox. It just sounds so generic to me, like something someone would make up for a faux game system in a TV show or something. However, I do really like what '360' added to the Xbox moniker; it made it sound pretty cool. But then Xbox One arrived and, well, see my opinion above on WiiU.

Yeah, Sega wins this as a whole.

My top 9: Dreamcast, Playstation, Genesis, Gamecube, Saturn, Xbox, N64, PSP, Wii.

Nintendo is all over the place and Microsoft got worse with each generation. Sony found a good name for a home console and stuck with it, which is smart. Vita isn't very good, though. They should have stayed with the PSP branding.

Wii U and Xbox One (for the third console) are two of the worst.

Of the three big brands, I would say these are the worst.
Sony: PSVita
Microsoft: Xbox one
Nintendo: 3ds or WiiU
PSvita, simply because it breaks the naming scheme they've been using.
Xbox one because it makes it sound like it's the first xbox, and now when I'm talking about the xbox I have to say "the original xbox."
Then the 3ds and wiiU because they're just terrible names. They're a nightmare from a marketing percpective because it makes them sound like add-ons for the older system. I've heard stories of people thinking the wiiU was an add on tablet for the wii. And the 3ds is terrible because it also just sounds like an add-on, especially considering how many different models of the ds there were.

"Just for comparison Uncharted 4 was 20x bigger than Splatoon 2. This shows the huge difference between Sony's first-party games and Nintendo's first-party games."
