And vouchers worth a further £130 for online consumers

HMV has kicked off its pre-order campaign for Grand Theft Auto IV offering online consumers 1000 free Xbox Live points and vouchers worth over GBP 130.

The free Microsoft points are double that offered by High Street rival GAME, as retailers prepare for what could be the biggest release of 2008.

"We've come up with what we believe to be a market-leading offer for Grand Theft Auto IV," commented Duncan La Barre, online games specialist at hmv.com.

"Grand Theft Auto IV is the biggest game release of 2008, and we're pleased to offer our online customers a great deal. If there's a better deal out there, we haven't seen it," he added.

The deal is only available for pre-orders of the game on Xbox 360, but unlike GAME's deal does not include the Grand Theft Auto IV: Special Edition SKU.

The game is released in the UK and Europe on April 29.

1000 microsoft points is how much in US?

Nice gesture, but won't really do that much. People don't go and say "Oh, you give away 1000 points? Let me buy GTAIV".

Fans of the series will buy it regardless.

I think 1600 points is about $20, so 1000 comes out to about $12.50 in the US. I've heard points are more expensive in Europe though (or was that Wii points?), so it might equal more there.

edit: checking amazon.co.uk 2100 points cost 17 pounds (18 is the standard price), so 1000 would be just under half that.

I'm not a big GTA fan (probably won't get it unless used/on sale) but if any retailers in the US were offering a free $12.50 for reserving it I would sign right up.

I'm not a big GTA fan (probably won't get it unless used/on sale) but if any retailers in the US were offering a free $12.50 for reserving it I would sign right up.


 You would pay for 60 dollar a game you aren't even a fan of to get 12 dollars?

That makes sense to you?

Of course, I'm under the assumption that people have limited disposable income and will only spend money on games they actually want.

I didn't say I wasn't a fan. Just not a big enough fan to drop $60 on release. I still owned/played the old GTA's when they went on sale or picked them up used. Getting an extra $12 on release date would be enough incentive IMO not to wait. I could then use the points for Rock Band DLC or XBLA games.

Also this could be used as another incentive for dual console owners (such as myself) to purchase the game on Microsoft's console.  To just blankly say something like this will have little or no effect at all just seems a little naive to me.
