Forums - Gaming - Rise of the Tomb Raider just sold me on buying Far Cry 4 ( slight review possible spoilers)

don't know about TR games, still have to play the reboot. but FC4 is a good game that just feels too similar to FC3, that part keep it from being great, the setting is better, the characters are on the same high level, the special missions are just dead gorgeous; overall better than FC3 but the similarities hold it down IMO.

Proudest Platinums - BF: Bad Company, Killzone 2 , Battlefield 3 and GTA4

Its been a year, so I dont remember everything.

I liked the characters. The open world is gorgeous and huge. The setting is just perfect.

I recall reclaiming Kyrat as very rewarding. When you capture a point(radio tower, outpost, etc) you really feel like you have expanded your operating zone. At 1st you feel like a nobody in foriegn land with a people how are on the verge of collapse then as you progress you are the hero and the world opens up. There are stupid amounts of collectables, but the game does not make you get them all. I think its around 50% if you are going for the plat.

Weapons are fun to use, and are diverse. Gyrocopter is fun as hell and makes getting around a joy (the vistas.... ).

Like I said its been a year and I dont remember the negatives(I dont recall the overall story being amazing, but it was not bad in a negative way, just not a high point) when means basically nothing left a bad taste in my mouth. Its just a fun sandbox for you to take some high powered weapondry and have fun.

Thanks. 50% for the plat? Not bad at all.

ya it varries I think the mask were like 70% but the one that would be most annoying is only like 35% of collectables. I want to say its a 40-50 hour plat if you focus on it. I played it for 50-60 hours and I am online missing the co-op trophies (2 of them). But I got like 75%+ of collectables.

Thanks for the summary, just a little remark: what you wrote seems to be far away from 9.0 (that's 9.0 out of 10, right?), that is the final mark and the review kinda don't fit together - at least that's my first impression.

I was only stating that the game took its best parts from other games. Playing Tomb Raider in some instances reminded me so much of a weak Far Cry with the hunting and customizing weaponry from your game. The map layout with the animal teriroties listed and more. The things I actually hated are the few things I listed in the paragraph before the verdict. Its an amazing game and GOTY worthy in that light. It took the best parts of three different games essentially. Uncharted, The last of Us and Far Cry. This isnt a full review as well...its a slight one. A full review from me would be fully fleshed out with more information. I was just trying to explain my reasons for the comparison and it ended up looking like a review. Sorry if I left things out. I've never written even a slight review before. Heh Again....the whole point of this topic was to state the reasons why Tomb Raider sold me on Far Cry 4. The map and crafting system was essentially a commercial for Far Cry. Taking from other games is only really cool if you're doing it right. Look at Shadow of Mordor. That game is largely Assassins Creed and Batman: Arkham Knight.

P.S.

Rise of the Tomb Raider didnt quite hit Uncharted 2 level but you will get the feeling that they were attempting to replicate it throughout the game once you get nearly halfway through. Truly a great game.

Ah OK then, and thanks for detailed reply. It makes much more sense if one reads it that way.

    CU......or CF ?

I enjoyed Uncharted 2 and 3 fairly well, haven't gone back to play the first one but someday I'll buy a PS4 and just play the remasters.

I didn't like the Tomb Raider 2013 at all. Played it maxed on PC, and it looked nice but I just didn't enjoy it.

I vastly preferred Far Cry 3 and 4 to Tomb Raider 2013, and got more out of them than UC2/3. Uncharted seemed to be fun in an action set-piece Indiana Jones sort of way even if I didn't 'feel' the mechanics of the gameplay were all that fun personally. Tomb Raider just felt like a chore to me that took itself way too seriously and the QTE stuff made me want to turn it off. I hate QTEs though most of the time anyway.

Blah. Anyway, ROTTR seems to be reviewed better than TR2013, so maybe I'll check out the PC version down the line. I hope FC5 comes out soon. Whatever caveman Far Cry sounds interesting, but it also kinda sounds like filler until the next mainline entry. Bring on FC5!

What caught me in surprise with FC4 is that at the beginning of the game where the guy says don't move...And you don't move for 10 minutes he comes back and you get a cutscene and beat the game :).

Uncharted 4 is droppoing in March as well. Give that peek if you want. The Rise of the Tomb Raider is well worth the wait. While you are playing it you will have moments of The Last of Us as well in the mechanics that you didnt find in the first Tomb Raider.
