Forums - Gaming - Sony getting away with paid online is the greatest current gen achievement so far.

For two generations people called MS greedy for paid online services. Taking that idea is now an achievement for Sony?

Also, you shouldn't call it an achievement. Since its Sony, it should be called a trophy.

The difference was that we weren't getting free games. It basically pays for itself.

It doesn't matter if PS+ pays for itself with free games. If online play became free on PS4, most people paying for PS+ plus would not renew.

Those free games matter a lot to us core gamers. But not to the average consumer.

Everyone was too busy screaming at MS for their wacky plan at that E3. Paying a monthly fee for online seemed like a blessing compared to what MS was trying to do.

Well what options did consumers have? Xbox also charged for online play.

In fact, just recently someone told me they want a PS4 because they don't want to pay for online play on Xbox.

lol... What rock were they living under? I take it that it's someone who isn't in the "know"?

Well why would they know? Sony never advertised they're charging for online play.

People played PS3 online free for the entire generation. I believe many people bought a PS4 not knowing online play was no longer free.

Frankly, not everybody buying a PS4 is a forum dweller or reading gaming news.

Did Microsoft advertise charging for online play? How is it any different? Who would have thought you had to play for online back in the day?

Sony charging for online play didn't affect you because you were already subscribed PS+. But the reality is relatively few PS3 owners had PS+. Sony said subscription went up 3x shortly after the release of PS4.

I certainly give credit to Sony for "free games." But most PS+ subscribers aren't there for free games, many don't even download the free games offered.

That isn't the point, the point is it's a better service than what XBL was because we got free games. That's why most people don't complain about PS+, if it didn't come with free games, people would be complaining a shit ton. Plain and simple.

Years ago when PS+ was a new service I said this was merely a stepping stone for Sony to charge for online play. Sony fans told me I wrong, got angry, etc.

A few years later, it came true via PS4. My prediction was people would defend Sony because of what the service offers. Even though Sony's primary goal was to charge people for online play. The demand for online play is bigger than "free" games.

That's exactly the discussion that's happening right here. No need to argue, I already saw this coming.

The thread is asking why did Sony not get the hassle Microsoft did.  I gave you the reason.  Because they offered a package where they can justify it.  Microsoft didn't and never would have if it wasn't for Sony.

If people only want to sub for online and not get the free games then fair enough.  A lot of people didn't bother getting rocket league and ended up having to buy it later when they discovered it was one of the years best games.  So obviously a large portion are just happy to pay and play.

Me and others who never liked the whole pay to play that Microsoft offered,  are kept happy by the monthly games. Keeps everyone happy.  Well played Sony,  well played.

I'm explaining why people may not know PS4 charges for online play. Many have/had the presumption only MS is charging for online play. Why? PS3 was free.

Yeah I bought PS+ on my PS3, strictly for the games (never played online), I didn't purchase my current PS+ membership on PS4 (gift card), but, I've never played online on it either (and won't).  I'll only keep it for the games.

What are you going on about? This thread is about how sony got away with paid online without no one complaining. The reason no one complained is because of free games, plain and simple. I'm not even sure why you're even trying to argue this.

No need to argue? Literally the first thing you did was start a SonyToo discussion by starting an argument.

Lol are you joking or something? You're the one who is starting all this crap by saying Sony did this too and they got away with it. You're just trying to start something.

I think the two biggest reasons are:

A.) The competition does it.

B.) They offer a lot of bonuses with it.

Most of the people who would play a PS4 are most likely to either get a PS4 or a XB1.  And since they're both asking for paid online, then it's a wash.  Most people aren't complaining that A does it, because B does it too.  If it's just one or the other, it's pretty easy to say, why are they asking for money for this?  Why can't it just be free like the other guys.

The free games mostly, are a really big part of why I think the rest of the group isn't complaining.  It's a really nice bonus, so long as the games are interesting and what people actually want.

Coupled with MS's pre-launch fuck ups taking up a considerable portion of people's attention, and i think you're pretty much on point here. I'm almost inclined to agree with the OT in calling it an 'achievement'. Sony played their cards to damn near perfection as far as avoiding a significant backlash went. Even most of us that were fully informed on the topic offered (and continue to offer) little more than 'Suck that they're forcing it, but ah well'

Edit: Accidentally quoted Mr Puggsly rather than the-pi-guy. Now fixed.

I think enjoying playing online games is what justified paying for online play. Also, Xbox had the edge in multiplayer games. I also took advage of discounts from my Gold account often.

I do give credit to Sony for the "free" games thing.  But I think the primary reason people didn't hassle Sony for charging for online play was simply because the competitor does as well. PS4 charging for online play is when Sony fans finally stopped complaining about Xbox Live.
