Forums - Gaming - Sony getting away with paid online is the greatest current gen achievement so far.

Yeah I really thought they'll get heavy backlash on this but I guess I didn't pay attention to the progress they were making with PS+. Lol

I think it was a case of "well, what choices do we have". I love the Wii-U, but most core gamers don't so that's not an option. Xbox One was pretty much unbuyable when it was first annouced due to no used games and DRM stuff... so really, there was only one place left and that was PS4. People had no choice but to eat that 50 bucks a year.

Personally, it only bothered me because PSN goes down for maintenance and stuff like that. If PSN was as solid as XBL, that 50 dollars would be fine by me.

For two generations people called MS greedy for paid online services. Taking that idea is now an achievement for Sony?

Also, you shouldn't call it an achievement. Since its Sony, it should be called a trophy.

The difference was that we weren't getting free games. It basically pays for itself.

Everyone was too busy screaming at MS for their wacky plan at that E3. Paying a monthly fee for online seemed like a blessing compared to what MS was trying to do.

Well what options did consumers have? Xbox also charged for online play.

In fact, just recently someone told me they want a PS4 because they don't want to pay for online play on Xbox.

lol... What rock were they living under? I take it that it's someone who isn't in the "know"?

If you're paying for something, is it free?  Also, I'll be honest and admit I'm not very familiar with Plus, but, isn't it more like a rental system than something you get to keep using permanently?

I'm sorry, do you pay for the games themselves? Or are you actually getting them for free. Please tell me, it's a simple yes or no question, are people paying more than $0 for the actual games?

Last gen I enjoyed not having to pay for online.  The money saved went into extra games.

Then they launched ps plus and when the good games started coming I subscribed for my ps3 and vita.  Best gaming service I've ever had.

Then ps4 required it but it made no difference because I was subbed anyway.  Well it made a difference. It meant I got an extra 2 games to choose from a month.

Microsoft rightfully got stick for it because they'd never any intention of offered monthly games.  You can thank good guy Sony for changing their minds.

Competition is always good as they say.

Sony charging for online play didn't affect you because you were already subscribed PS+. But the reality is relatively few PS3 owners had PS+. Sony said subscription went up 3x shortly after the release of PS4.

I certainly give credit to Sony for "free games." But most PS+ subscribers aren't there for free games, many don't even download the free games offered.

Good for them, it was the reason i chose the PS3 instead of 360 though, that and BC.

That isn't the point, the point is it's a better service than what XBL was because we got free games. That's why most people don't complain about PS+, if it didn't come with free games, people would be complaining a shit ton. Plain and simple.

Well why would they know? Sony never advertised they're charging for online play.

People played PS3 online free for the entire generation. I believe many people bought a PS4 not knowing online play was no longer free.

Frankly, not everybody buying a PS4 is a forum dweller or reading gaming news.
