Forums - Gaming - Sub-1080p PS4 games and sub-900p X1 games aren't going anywhere

Tagged games:

Early in the generation, titles like Battlefield 4 (which was 900p on PS4 and 720p on Xbox One) were ruled out by many as casualties of developer unfamiliarity with the new systems, who said that as time went on, there wouldn't be anymore PS4 games that fell short of 1080p, or any more Xbox One games in the sub-900p range.

Two years later, I think it's safe to say that sub-1080p PS4 games and sub-900p Xbox One games are here to stay.

In the last month or so, Star Wars Battlefront 3 shipped at 900p on PS4 and 720p on X1, Assassin's Creed Syndicate joined the PS4 900p club, while Black Ops 3 employs a dynamic resolution that drops below 1080p on PS4 and below 900p on Xbox One.

To top it all off, Naughty Dog, one of the most graphically capable studios on the planet, announced that Uncharted 4's multiplayer would be 900p on PS4.

Just like with the numerous sub-720p games on PS3 and 360 last gen, many developers are prioritizing other graphical elements over raw pixel count, and at this point, it looks like this trend will continue throughout this generation.

Still better than the majority of last gen AAA games being sub-HD ...

As someone who doesn't consider the difference between 720p and 1080p that big of a deal, and favours framerate over resolution, I ain't mad.

But but but developers are only starting to tap into the potential of the console hardware! In 3 years all games will be 4k 120fps once the developers have figured out the extremely convoluted and difficult hardware platform.

If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.

Probably true as annoying as it is.

I find it to be a pretty big deal since it enhances longer range gameplay and image quality when I'm sitting close to my monitor ...

I guess that's the difference; I play on a TV that I sit more than two meters back from. XD

I'm playing battlefront on ps4 and the jump from the last dice game battlefield 4 is phenomenal.

Two things make the difference for me. They've already developed for next gen so have that experience but secondly there's no last gen.

Battlefield 4 still looks excellent to this day so it's no mean feat.

Compare the forest map zavod on bf4 to the forest map on battlefront. Massive leap.

Battlefield 5 or bad company 3 will be another leap although lesser. But it's going to be epic regardless.

And the icing on the cake. No connection issues with battlefront. Bf4 had those for 8 months.

We should all just wait for next gen when all these games are rereleased in real 1080p and 60fps..

Face the future.. Gamecenter ID: nikkom_nl (oh no he didn't!!)

I was never expecting them to go away. There will always be times when a developer decides [x] technical variable is more important than [y] for their game, and they'll optimize in accordance with that. We even have instances of developers straying away from standards we normally don't even think about (such as the 16:9 aspect ratio), or them trying out relatively unique ideas (such as the simulated 1080p in Killzone:SF's MP). Their decisions might not always line up with my preferences, but i can at least appreciate that they're (usually) trying to achieve what they consider the best overall end result for a game on static hardware.
