I was never expecting them to go away. There will always be times when a developer decides [x] technical variable is more important than [y] for their game, and they'll optimize in accordance with that. We even have instances of developers straying away from standards we normally don't even think about (such as the 16:9 aspect ratio), or them trying out relatively unique ideas (such as the simulated 1080p in Killzone:SF's MP). Their decisions might not always line up with my preferences, but i can at least appreciate that they're (usually) trying to achieve what they consider the best overall end result for a game on static hardware.
