Forums - Gaming - 60Fps - is it really that important?

Is 60 fps just placebo?

Yes, you wont notice a big difference 98 28.32%

No!!!!!! 248 71.68%

I would like to say that I noticed the difference the most when YouTube started to support 60 fps videos. I remember there were some videos I uploaded of an MMORPG that I used to play which were originally 60fps, but YouTube didn't support it then. I went back to watch them again a few months after YouTube upgraded to 60fps, and I was amazed at how much smoother the video was. It was actually something that bothered me about YouTube at the time. I would have the videos rendered at 60fps on my PC and they seemed so smooth and then I would upload them an they felt choppy in comparison.

This was pretty much how I first started to notice the difference. Well I more could see a "double vision" effect on the movement on some of my games, while others flew by silky smooth. (Metropolis Street Racer and F355 Challenge were the click moment when I tried to find out what the difference was).

The thing is, not everybody CAN see the difference. However I can guarantee you give me a blind test of 30fps vs 60fps I can pick them out every time. This was how I knew Zelda WW was 30fps despite all the reviews claiming 60fps. What a disappointing day that was.

See that's the thing. To me the difference is so obvious that it's hard to believe others may not see it.

I think this website does a very good comparison between the two: http://www.30vs60.com/bf4driving.php

It's very hard to convey the difference in videos. It has to be felt since one of the biggest factors of high FPS is responsiveness. It feels smooth because your actions are translated  much faster into visual feedback.

That's one of the reasons why VR (with presence) would be absolutely impossible at 30fps. In VR, fps is the difference between having fun and covering the floor in puke. That's why I will never accept anyone saying that they don't see the difference. Either they're lying or they don't know how to properly test things.

Absolutely I agree. The real difference is most noticeable during gameplay because of the better response time. It's not just a visual thing.

That being said I think the difference is clear enough that it can even be seen in videos without even playing. But yes playing is the best way to tell the difference.

Very few games that generation managed to really impress visually while holding a rock solid 60fps.  F-Zero GX is one of the few titles that comes to mind that actually accomplished this...

-sigh-

I know this is off topic, but I really miss F-Zero. And as neat as Fast Racing Neo looks, it isn't F-Zero. I'd love to see a new F-Zero game with the story mode animated by these guys:

It depends on the game, and to say framerate is sacrificed when a game is 1080p is completely ignorant and idiotic.

1) Framerate is often tied to how fast the CPU is, and these consoles have a dis-proportionally weak CPU with regards to their GPU (When compared to previous gens). Just because it is 1080p 30 FPS, does not mean it would have been 60 FPS at a lower resolution.

2) The PS4 at the very least is MORE than capable of running all games out now in 1080p. The problem is EA and Ubisoft are often sacrificing res for more effects. Imo this is a nonsensical trade-off since 1080p is often required to see the fine details of these effects. It should be: 1) make it 1080p, 2) see what effects you can squeeze in afterwards.

3) Some games like Until Dawn have no need for 60 FPS. To say "Every" game should have this is silly.

Overall it should be:

Step 1: Make the game 1080p (NO EXCUSES)

Step 2: If 60 FPS would help (In most games it would), get it 60 FPS.

Step 3: Add extra effects, AI, and Physics until you can no longer get 60 FPS - and then stop.

The problem is they are doing things in literally the opposite order since engines and aspirations are decided first and then bog down the game. It would be nice if they could find a way to set limits and projections ahead of time without stifling ambition and creativity.

Prediction for console Lifetime sales:

Wii:100-120 million, PS3:80-110 million, 360:70-100 million

[Prediction Made 11/5/2009]

3DS: 65m, PSV: 22m, Wii U: 18-22m, PS4: 80-120m, X1: 35-55m

I gauruntee the PS5 comes out after only 5-6 years after the launch of the PS4.

[Prediction Made 6/18/2014]

Madhouse. The movie is Redline. If anyone here likes F-Zero or appreciates beautiful animation, they should watch this. Top 5 greatest peice of animation I've ever watched, and I'm including Disney and Ghibli movies here. It's absolutely mind blowing.

Sorry, I had to stop reading after this. Where the hell did you get that one from?

While it is true that the new consoles have a potato where the CPU should be, everything is still bottlenecked at the GPU, which is also part of the same potato. Tell me one game that is limited by CPU and I will tell you a thousand that are limited by GPU.

I guess these X1 developers must be complete idiots. They actually lower the resolution on multiplat games even though the X1 has a slightly stronger CPU. What a bunch of morons.

It really looks amazing. I fit into both categories so I think I know what I'm going to watch tonight.
