Forums - Gaming Discussion - Which generation of console gaming was the biggest leap forward?

Which generation displayed the greatest advancement?

Gen 3 - Gen 4 13 2.83%

I would be interested to hear what people think was the generation of console gaming that truly felt like a massive step forward in terms of processing power, graphics and the types of games that were on offer. Do you think that in recent years the jump has reduced or just the opposite?

Below I will provide examples of consoles from each gen to jog your memory. I have not included handheld consoles at this time.

Generation 1 - Magnavox Odyssey

Generation 2 - Atari 2600

Generation 3 - NES, Sega Master System, Atari 7800

Generation 4 - SNES, Sega Mega Drive, Neo Geo MVS, PC Engine

Generation 5 - Playstation, N64, Sega Saturn

Generation 6 - Sega Dreamcast, Playstation 2, Nintendo GameCube, XBOX

Generation 7 - XBOX 360, Nintendo Wii, Playstation 3

Generation 8 - Nintendo Wii U, Playstation 4, XBOX One

Either 4->5 or 5->6.  Can't decide.

Isn't 4 to 5 basically universally considered the biggest leap due to going from 2D to 3D? I might be wrong, but I'm pretty sure that's the general consensus.

3DS Friend Code:  4210-5277-5484

Man, those 64 bits did it. 2D to real 3D, it's the only answer. Super Mario 64 ushered in that era like a boss.

Fifth generation obviously because of the Z-axis

Gen 7-8. The absolute amount of hardware power compared to the previous one is so big that you could fit all previous upgrades into it.

If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.

Either the 5 or 6, but I would probably go with the 5th. The move from 2D to 3D was such a huge jump for gaming. x ) It was possibly a huge deal for us first timers...
