I can't tell if this is a sarcastic post or not, but isn't that the point of reviews?

But what IS fun?  What is objectively fun?  I play games for a lot of reasons, like my own personal definition of fun for instance.  But I also play and recognize games that push boundaries to go where no games have dared to go and see if I would like or maybe even prefer that unfamiliar pathway.  At first I might not consider it fun, but later end up liking it more than games I currently considered fun.  Besides fun, I also play games to be attached to the story and hopefully feel a sense of poignancy.  Everybody has their reasons.

As for reviews, It's much easier to point out objective cons rather than pros.  FPS dipping for instance (although imo not that big a deal until it hits a certain level).  On the other hand what about too many similarities to switch gears a little?

I'm hearing that Fallout 4 has too many similarities to Fallout 3 from some reviews.  You can easily prove similarities  or cut and pasted designs as a flaw.  It doesn't matter if people are ok with it, I believe I said this before either in this thread or another thread recently but games should not be getting away with that; regardless of release windows..

You can copy and paste OoT, SMB3, Fallout 3, Oblivion, Halo, God of War, Gears and so on with a new coat of paint and people will still enjoy them and consider them fun for forever.  But if we're going by the integrity of a game and as contenders against other games, it should be considered lazy and be counted against.  After all, we're looking at so many different developers work and comparing them all.  You can't have this one game from this one established series get ridiculously high scores even if there's  a slightly new mechanic here or there.  If the experience is too similar, then it should be taken into consideration.

The game can be your own personal GOTY if you feel that strongly about it as a professional reviewer getting paid to review games, but you have to do your job first and dot your i's and so forth.

Please note this isn't simply a rant on Fallout 4 per se, just in general about some series' that impressed people at one point and now hardly change keep getting the same high reviews and plenty of awards for minimal thought in game design effort.

You weren't ranting in your post, you were reasonable and I also agree with most of what you said.

Though if different people have different interpretations of what can be fun and enjoyable in a game, then it would only be fair to acknowledge that reviewers can also be the same. They're not supposed to tell the reader or viewer what's fun for them or not, that's up for them to decide after lisening or reading about the reviewers experience and critique.

I've seen two reviews for Fallout 4 so far. They both mentioned that it was similar to Fallout 3, the framedrops and the plethora of glitches while still remaning positive overall. The point I'm trying to make is that it's important to disclose this type of information even if they felt like it was a good improvement over the last entry in the series.

Yeah... "budget" PC...

Well..I have an Xbox One and I do not find the game "broken" by any means.
The game is more than enjoyable and fully playable. In a single player game I do not mind if this happen (very rarely...)

While I would have love the game studio to try to optimize their old engine a bit better, I have no doubt that they tried.
Also investing into a new engine requires a lot of resources so until they do games may have some performance issues, no big deal as the game fully playable and the content is amazing as always with them.

Oh, thanks for that. I'm kind of surprised the game released with some of those issues. I wondered if they could have been fixed with time, or it's just something outside of their control. If they're using an old engine, maybe it's time they upgrade it, or move on to a new one, haha...

It's an interesting question and I wish some gaming writer would ask it (though perhaps they have and didn't get an answer).  Fallout 3 had all of these bugs, which is somewhat understandable considering how much new stuff it brought to the table at the time.  New Vegas was a spin-off given to another developer, so they didn't really touch the engine at all and the bugs were exactly the same.  Skyrim had many of the same bugs but it also had a lot of improvements--or maybe they just didn't crop up as much because it used some different assets.  I can't say for sure.

I suppose the jarring thing is that many of the reviewers mentioned the high quality work Bethesda does in other, non-technical areas of game creation.

So why back to the well this far out with an obviously inferior engine?  I really have no idea, unless maybe they thought they'd lose too much time learning a new engine, as they'd have to try to make all of Fallout's classic systems work within a new framework.  Perhaps they tried it and they couldn't make it feel like "Fallout".

Bethesda is a fairly small team in terms of "AAA".  If I remember right, it's actually like 100 people who switch between Fallout and Elder Scrolls.  They jumped on Skyrim immediately after finishing Fallout 3.  I'd like to see them hire a dedicated expert who can start working on the next next game-engine right now without feeling the pressure of time.

Maybe they wanted to get to Fallout 4 right away and didn't have time to make a new one? Or maybe the engine is good enough for them, despite the glitches. Maybe the glitches are part of the charm of their games? Haha... That last one is farfatched though. Who would be okay with these glitches, even if sometimes they are comical..?

As for reviewers, I suppose as the glitches don't get in the way of the game or aren't very bad, they won't dock much off of it. I guess all reviewers have different criteria when they score games. What would be the best way to grade something like FO4, well, I dunno...

Perhaps Bethesda should just get to work on a new engine before making another new game, who knows, haha...

There's 2 IPs that i NEVER buy on day one.

One is Ass Creed, the other is Fallout.

Bethesda are a bunch of hacks, i'll buy this game when mods fix their newest broken mess in a few months.

I was going to play this on my PS4 but i guess i'll stick to PC again.

Just went and bought it for PC, have to go retail since I have 40GB surf limitation currently and till january. Guess what? The retail version for PC requires a 20GB download and only has around 5GB on the actual disc.

Now that is proper bullshit from Bethesda.

That 0 FPS drop is just gorgeuous.

But yeah, I am tired of companies releasing games hat aren't 100% polsihed, and then people have to rely on things like mods just to get the proper experience.

"Just for comparison Uncharted 4 was 20x bigger than Splatoon 2. This shows the huge difference between Sony's first-party games and Nintendo's first-party games."

Vote with your wallet as I do. The only Bethesda core team game I have bought was TES: Skyrim on PS3 and it was a terrible experience for more than one reason. The constant crashes and lock-ups the game suffered on the console, as well as the world just not being interesting enough to navigate and explore. Too big and too empty, plot suffered heavily and consequently I quickly lost interest. Plot and character advancement are my motivators to keep playing a game, along with well optimized exploration. Their games have none of that and it was the first and likely to be last game I ever bought from their main team. (Dishonored I also bought but that's from a completely different team and different game engine)

Bethesda keeps getting away with broken games because people keep buying them. We have people here who acknowledge Besthesda's iffy quality for over decade but yet you still payed them. Problem falls on buyers at this point.

If the buyers are happy with their purchase then there is no problem.
