Ughhhh....

My nostalgia says FFX (first game ever I played on PS2), but my honesty says FFXII.

I liked the FFXII's overall plot more than FFX's. FFXII's gameplay is vastly superior, altho it has its fault with the gambit system (you could make battles completely automatic), it's open world, it has way more content, more complex and interesting villains, way cooler locations (giruvegan's huge ass crystal, omg), It had actual cities, more interesting lore (dinasty kings, magicite, netecites, occuria, it was very linked to crystals, which is more Final Fantasy'ish) and while we didn't get the usual summons, we still did get some very badass ones and traditional summons names were battle airships, etc.

I could write so much about this, but to make it simple. I think FFXII is better than FFX in almost every category except for soundtrack (not by much, tho) and emotional impact (just because of the end, really).

FFX, nothing against FFXII though. Its also probs in my top 5-10 games of all time.

if the story of 12 was better in which the protagonist Vaan, had actually some involvement and if the main character didnt look gay, I would say FFXII because gameplay is awesome.  Also the graphics on this game for a PS2 game are CRAZY AWESOME.

If the main character design was better, if tidus had the appearance of Shuyin (x-2) and his behavior, then I would prefer FFX. Also if the combat music was different for GOD SAKE!! I still have it in my head for how hideous it was. But the story is really amazing and rivals the one of FFVII in complexity.

Both games did so mnay great things and so many crappy things it is difficult to decide which is better.

Final Fantasy x and xii are sort of mirror images of each other, x has a shallow and uninspired combat system in the ctb that removes any real sense of urgency from the gameplay but does have a thoughtful and engaging story though told primarily through perhaps the worst protagonist in the series' history and a somewhat dull supporting cast outside of Auron. Meanwhile, xii has a deep and complex combat system that can be quite fun, of course it can start just playing itself but finding the right combination of gambits to make that happen can be satisfying in its own right, but the story, well, I've completed two order of ambrosia runs and I couldn't tell you a damn thing about the story, something about a betrayed princess and Basch having a twin or something? It's just bland and forgettable, yet it has a strong supporting cast of characters in the aforementioned Basch, Balthier, Fran and even Ashe to a certain extent, though like with x the protagonists are utter shit and just feel like they're along for the ride more than anything.

In all I'd give the edge to xii, because I at least had some fun with it and felt compelled to replay it, was never interested enough to give x another go.

FF X is probably the magnum opus of the IP, which makes it's "uncool" to like. Anything that goes mainstream, regardless of quality, must be hated. It is rule 101 in the internet warrior's handbook of how to be hip and cool.

I don't subscribe to said book.

I really like both games. Both games I first played, because my uncle owned them. And I eventually bought both games.

FFX had a great story, and first playthrough I played until the end in order to finish the story. The story could really grip me, and I felt like I was part of the universe. Great battle system, turn based and as long as you didn't force level yourself some battles could be challenging the first time. However once your summons got strong enough it was no contest. Speaking of summons, I liked them all and they were quite powerful. You can customize their stats and abilities and generally destroy everything. Item customization was also fun to mess around with, even for cosmetic reasons.

Characters are all nice, did not dislike any of them. Having 7 characters made the story unique enough and the combat often differentiated. After I beat the game, I have created many other games. Definitely spent over 500 hours in this game, going through the story over and over doing all the sidequests. Sometimes purposefully making my characters go a bad route in the sphere grid to create more challenge. FFX also had some great philisophical points made in the game. And had meaningful deaths and plot twists.

FFXII had a great setting. The Medieval type, and the judges were really cool. I went through the first 5 hours of the game 3 or 4 times in a row unfortunately, due to only playing it when i visited my uncle at the time. When I finally bought the game, the beginning was really annoying. Finally getting past that, the game hooked me for nights on end. I liked the shops and customization of my characters. I really liked the strategy involved for some of the fights I had to do, even going so far as keeping guest characters for grinding and sidequests.

Six characters is a bit small for my tastes, but the guests were really cool. Exploration was really nice, I still remember randomly exploring a cave and then all of a sudden a boss fight. Had no knowledge of how to beat him, and he wrecked me for awhile. Then I adapted and eventually brought him down, and got myself a brand new summon. Summons were kind of lackluster but still fun to use. Game was long enough for one playthrough at 80 hours, though I would be annoyed to start a new game due to the first 5 hours.

I put FFX just ahead of it.

10 is better I think. But I'd be more interested in playing an Ff12 remaster, especially on the vita.

Is that game going to be remastered after all?

Ive read somewhere that it was, but havent seen anything since then.

12 is by far one of the worst Final Fantasy out there, it took me until the end of the game to realize I hated almost everything about it. Story, setting, characters and gameplay the 4 pillers of a good game (some would say) are not here.

For me its not even a fair comparison.FFX is just miles better than FFXII in almost everything. The carachters in FFX are more likable and have way more depth than almost all FFXII carachters(with exceptions like Basch), and also i have agrudge against Vaan and his uselessness to the overall story. The battle system is also better in FFX, it is way more strategic and fun for me.Not to say that FFXII battle system is bad, its actually great, but not only i prefer turn based, but i sincerely think that FFX battle is more engaging and better overall.
The music is not even a contest.FFX just destroy FFXII.More emotional, mor epic, more badass.Until this day for me themusic that best describes FF is To Zanarkand. And while voice acting is debatable, i find FFX better.
The only thing real "problem" of FFX is linearity. While i didnt mind, and actually prefered this way, it is really a negative for the game, as opposed to FFXII, which is more open and have more branching paths.

So yeah, for me FFX is leagues ahead of FFXII.FFXII is still an excellent game, as all FF games are, but FFX is simply much better.

My (locked) thread about how difficulty should be a decision for the developers, not the gamers.
