Where's the epic Nintendo?

"Epic" titles are too expensive to produce these days for Nintendo's tastes, so only certain IP that Nintendo is sure will return the investment get big dollars (ie: Mario Kart 8).

Back in the day "epic titles" had much smaller development budgets, for example Donkey Kong Country, which basically won the console wars for the Super NES was pitched to Mr. Yamauchi as something that would only cost about as much as a couple of Nintendo's TV commercials (about $2-$3 million dollars) by an NOA rep, so he agreed on that basis.

Today, you're talking 20-30X that cost for something like Destiny.

Nothing more epic than this game:

Retro is allowed to pitch 3 games to Nintendo and if none of them are greenlit Nintendo decides for them. Their current project was of their own chosing according to an insider.

Yes "pitch" and according to an "insider".

Let's assume this info is true. pitching ideas and letting them take a risk and develop it are two different things. Nintendo should have faith that Retro who has demonstrated quality games does not need too much watching over to freely develop something.

Also imaging if there was no "pitch" required than perhaps eve crazier ideas would make it to games.  Retro probably have learned over the years what a "safe" pitch is to NIntendo and tell them the kind of ideas Nintendo wants to hear to get the approval.

NSMBU best NSMB game, Pikmin 3 best Pikmin game, DKTF best Donkey Kong game, Mario Kart 8 best Mario Kart game, Smash Bros best Smash Bros game, Yoshi Wolly World best Yoshi game after first Yoshi game, Zelda U looks like will be one of the best Zelda games ever.

Don't kid yourself. It's not exactly about whether or not certain games are 'good' or 'enjoyable', that's irrelevant to the greater scheme. It's about progression, evolution, advancement. Past Nintendo games, up until early 3DS, had an ambition, a sense of wanting to be more, to help further develop the gaming industry as a whole with fresh ideas. This was a part of what made the games great, made them classics, what made minds of people wander and metaphorically had everyone look at the stars. Seriously, put all games in a series in a graph, consider those key words and say the line didn't flatline for most series with WiiU. That's where the disappointment lies, that's the source of the lukewarm perception of the system and by extention it's low sales. Don't know if there's a saying like this in English, most likely there is, but here we'd say something like "to stand still is to go backwards".

You mean something like Splatoon!? It sounds to me like you were talking about something like Splatoon.

If compare this Nintendo gen and previous, only thing we lack is "Epic" Mario like Mario Galaxy and Metroid Prime. Almost all other thing we have or we will have, not just that, same of those games are best in their whole franchises and we have something totally new, fresh and great like Splatoon, not to mentioned Xenoblade X game that is very ambitious and big or most ambitious Zelda game ever.

And what's most important, Nintendo manage to delivers all that despite huge problems they having this gen, like they had huge problems with HD development, bad launch for 3DS (they invest huge effort to save 3DS after launch and they succeed), terrible Wii U sales and all about that console...despite all that still delivered so many great things this gen and I am pretty sure if Wii U isn't in such a terrible condition we would have another 3D Mario game that is more "Epic" than Mario 3D World and new Metroid, but now we will get those games on NX instead.

3D World and Splatoon aren't really ambitious titles. 3D World is Super Mario 3D Land in HD with lengther levels and multiplayer. Splatoon, while being a fresh IP for Nintendo, lacks many features that Nintendo online multiplayer games have including 4 player local multiplayer and better online matchmaking and options.

Both games are great to play but 3D World definitely doesn't match the ambition and epic scale that Super Mario Galaxy has nor does Splatoon seem as ambitious or epic as any other Nintendo multiplayer game with online.

Mario 3D World certainly isn't ambitious or "Epic" like Mario Galaxy but its still great 3D Mario game and of the best games this gen.

Splatoon is very ambitious title despite lacs some online options, it's completely fresh and great new big IP for Nintendo and I can see that will outsell Smash Bros on NX. I really don't see why every Nintendo game needs to have 4 player local multiplayer, especially when game is totally online focused in comparison with Mario Kart or Smash Bros.

I really hope we do.

They didn't go anywhere because they never existed, can anybody show me a time when Nintendo was pumping out "epic" games back to back? Since some people here don't want to count Wii U titles like W101 or Bayo 2, that means we can't can't any outsourced titles, just games developed by Nintendo internal teams and wholly owned subsidiaries.

An insider that has proven to be correct pretty much every time. And the rest of your post is just baseless speculation.

And so we go back to the original discussion of this thread and that is Nintendo has decreased their output in epic scale games in the Wii U compared to every home console before it. Which is fine because we can all agree 3D World and Splatoon are fun and addicitve to play. However, for consumers who expected Nintendo to continue making epic scale games, this generation isn't as fullfilling as previous generations.
