Blahblah, don't kid yourself. It's not exactly about whether or not certain games are 'good' or 'enjoyable', it's about progression, evolution, advancement. Past Nintendo games, up until early this generation, had an ambition, a sense of wanting to be more, to help further develop the gaming industry as a whole. This was a part of what made them great,  made them classics, what made minds of people wander and metaphorically had everyone look at the stars. Seriously, put all games in a series in a graph and say the line didn't flatline for most series. Don't know if there's a saying like this in English, most likely there is, but here we'd say something like "to stand still is to go backwards".

I think you are kidding yourself if you think that the start of the eighth generation was fine by your metrics. What are these early games that pushed the boundaries?

I thought the middle of the night would be a safe time to edit posts .

The beginning of the 3DS's generation. Mario 3D Land was such a game that complies in my opinion, or Kid Icarus even though I thought it was flawed from a gameplay perspective, for a handheld.

Nah what upsets me is Retro has the potential to create NEW IPs but Nintendo play it too safe with them and instead they end up making DK. Nothing wrong with that but I would love to see retro expand to say two to three dev teams,  Two working on known Nintendo IP and one focusing on developing new IP.

They have enough talent there to help train up a new generation of developer. Mentor the young ones in your ways and then you will have this awesome dev with multip teams. Naughty Dog is a good example of how they gotten better and better because Sony let them go all out.

Saying all this I probably wouldn't feel this way if Nintendo purchased out RARE back in the day. So many great IPs lost that were kind of killed of by MIcrosoft an dnow as a last hope to regain some NIntnedo gamers onto xbox they starting to release a few of them lol.  If NIntendo owned these form the start you would think there be a killer instinct every gen, same with a perfect dark and these franchises could have growth to be big flagship exclusives that sold the console and fill some gaps Nintendo systems miss. DOn't forget there was Banjo and Conker and plenty of other smaller IPs that coudl be used to fill gaps here and there.

That wasn't Nintendo, Retro themselves chose to do another DK they were given a choice to pitch an idea but chose to do DK.

Retro is Nintendo, at this point no doubt a number of primary Nintendo software developers have been integrated into that unit

Retro did the last few Donkey Kong games... they are as "Nintendo" as you can get

in terms of serious games- I think Bayonetta falls in that category, even if Nintendo just funded it. while it's true there have not been a plethora of intense adventure games for the Wii U, I think it would be fair to give Nintendo a littleeee room here. generally in their history they have done a good job at maintaing relative balance by releasing more adult friendly adventure games

it would appear you (the OP) are extremely fond of the Zelda and Metroid series in the more serious tone (as am I) so I understand your frustration since both have been absent this generation

that said, Xenoblade is coming out and obviously that is not really a child-friendly games in terms of difficulty. I do find frustration in Nintendo for the massive Zelda delay, especially when it's been hyped up for so long, and the quiet hush hush on any Metroid Projects.

you will likely find a lot more solace with the late Wii U library or that of the NX, but it would seem that Nintendo has been holding back their more serious projects

Retro is allowed to pitch 3 games to Nintendo and if none of them are greenlit Nintendo decides for them. Their current project was of their own chosing according to an insider.

I was right. You are kidding yourself.

Well okay maybe those weren't as influential or ambitious as a Mario 64 or Wii Sports, but the point is, in the past, Nintendo gaming was better.

Anyway, I disagree with the notion that Nintendo doesn't develop epic games anymore. The problem with this thread, like so often, is that it builds too much on subjectivity, so most of the discussion is bickering and there isn't much to get out of it.

These threads can't really exist based on objectivity either way though, there's no solid metric to test anything against. I'm aware of that. Unless the "average expectation of the general public" is a metric, which, judging by the sales of the system, seems to be in favor of the premise of this thread.

Captain Toad is really amazing. The same goes for Wooly World, Mario Maker and Mario Kart

But none of them are "epic".

In your opinion. Seriously though, i dont get your post at all. What the hell is "Epic" to you >_<

Mario Kart 8, A link Between Worlds, Super Mario 3DWorld, Pikmin 3, Luigi's Mansion Dark Moon, DK Tropical Freeze, Smash Bros 4, Fire Emblem Awakening, Super Mario Maker, AC New Leaf and Splatoon had been pretty epic to me

Others I won´t called them epic but are pretty damn good anyways, like Captain Toad, Yoshi Woolly World, Hyrule Warriors etc, also Nintendo made possible that Bayonetta 2 was released on WiiU and that one is fucking epic.

And for the love of God you are going to get one of the most ambitious games that Nintendo has ever done just next month, Xenoblade Chronicles X, that, my dear soulmate, is the definition of epicness made videogame.

And next year we know they´ll release Fire Emblem Fates, #FE, Pokken and Zelda U, that could easily be the most ambitious Zelda ever, and that is only a piece of the anouncements we´ll have once NX is revealed, they probably have a bunch of epic games in development right now that will not be released on the WiiU because they just cannot afford it for such a low install base sadly. They were overwhelmed for HD development so they have been more slow delivering the goods, but they have delivered a good amount anyways and that problem is gonna be over soon, they should be feelling way more confortable with HD development already.

The Nintendo you talk about is the Yamauchi Nintendo. The NES to Gamecube era was his baby. Iwata ran the company in a much different way. Instead of competing, he found his own path.

So if you want the N64 Nintendo to come back, pray that the new president shares Yamauchi's style of management. If he does, you'll get your wish.

3D World and Splatoon aren't really ambitious titles. 3D World is Super Mario 3D Land in HD with lengther levels and multiplayer. Splatoon, while being a fresh IP for Nintendo, lacks many features that Nintendo online multiplayer games have including 4 player local multiplayer and better online matchmaking and options.

Both games are great to play but 3D World definitely doesn't match the ambition and epic scale that Super Mario Galaxy has nor does Splatoon seem as ambitious or epic as any other Nintendo multiplayer game with online.

I think you are greatly underselling Splatoon. It wasn't made by the people who have been at Nintendo since.... Well, even the Galaxy series. If it were EAD 3 I'd see your point, but for a new development team to create something like Splatoon is astronomically ambitious.
