Forums - PC - Battle for Wesnoth

Recently I realized, that the game Battle for Wesnoth has released version 1.4 and I think it's about time to make a thread about this game. Battle for Wesnoth is a turn-based strategy game with many RPG elements. You have different campaigns, each with many scenarios. You can in each scenario recruit troops. They advance as they gain EXP in the battle. In the next scenario of the same mission you can recall them and use their advanced battle experience for your benefit. One of the biggest changes in version 1.4 is the introduction of new campaigns, now you can choose between 13 main campaigns. That's a lot of playtime. As I purchased Fire Emblem for Wii last week I realized how similar both games are. In both games you have turn-based battles and characters that advance over the course of the game. Of course both games also have big differences, but I think people that like Fire Emblem should at least give Wesnoth a try. And you can try this game without any risk, because it's a free game available for Windows, MacOSX and Linux. If you like an epic story, you should try 'Heir to the Throne' as the first mission. Website: http://wesnoth.org/ Game database: http://vgchartz.com/games/game.php?id=16292 You may have noticed, that I like the game, but I'm interested in how much you may like it or not. Maybe you think it's boring. Or frustrating if you made a long turn and in the turn of the enemy you lose an important character. Share your opinion.

I play this game not just the campaigns but also the excellent online. A brilliant game.

You can also select from a million languages including Finnish and Latin. How awesome is that?!?! =P

Unfortunately it's not quite the game for me. My combination of stubborn perfectionism and lack of skill tends to result in constant save/load abuse, which really takes the fun out of the game.

I have played the campaign (at least a part) and I stopped played it (dont know why)

I was a good game, very well done. It is right you are a bit angry when u lose a character. It is because there is a lot of random in the fight (as in Wii Fire emblem) so u can lose or win a battle just because of these random element.

==> lol, I assume everybody do this ^^

In a way, It is the way this game is supposed to be played : if u want to keep ur character alive = save/load

Yes, it can lead to much save/load, but you also can learn how to tactically clever position your troops. But theres always a slight chance, that you try to kill an enemy by three of your troops, and all three miss, so that the enemy can in the next turn kill some of your important characters. Thanks to dawve24 and Parokki to mentioning online and localization. I missed that points in my original post.

That's a very addictive western style SRPG. In that it's dangerous for my limited free time, so I avoid playing it. I remember playing it 8 hours straight when I wanted to play only half an hour.

Anyway it's very good. It started as a show of what you can do with the Linux's equivalent of DirectX, which is SDL. I even participated in the early development and translations, but stopped well before 1.0 version.

A very good free game.

I like it a lot though the fact that it's almost all generic units makes it not my favorite game ever. It's kinda like playing a turn based Age of Empires.

I'm one of those pain in the ass I don't want anyone to die, even the generic characters because i've assigned them personalites! Gamers.

My only real problem is i have to use the Windows version and Vista won't let me make my own scenarios.

I make maps... the maps save... I can open them... but when I go to the directory they are in... they aren't visible in windows explorerer. WTF?

Then I try and save the WML documents and it says I have to be the administrator and i can't figure out how to swich my vista account into the administrator acount.

Ha, i'd be scared to play online as i barely can beat the computer.

I am not very good either. However, if you play 2vs2 online you will probably get a good ally who can win it for you.

Online on wesnoth is great you get all skill levels on it.
