Viz Media thinks Yokai Watch will be bigger than Pokemon and effectively replace Pokemon in Japan and maybe even NA/EU. Here's what the dude said:

"This will be the next big boys' brand, essentially the next Pokémon. We have very high expectations for the market and for the UK.We are certainly bigger than Pokémon in Japan; we currently have 95 per cent market share in that region"

Bag o' laughs man. Yokai will flop huge in NA. I don't even think the show is faring that well. As if I don't know the answer, what do you guys think? Will the new challenger, Yokai Watch, take over the 200+ Million seller that is Pokemon?

It could definitely be big, but I don't see Yokai Watch beating Pokemon

I can't find where he said it would replace Pokemon. Is it in another article?

What's wrong with this guy? Saying they are already bigger than Pokemon and have 95% marketshare? 95% of what market? If it's just Yokai vs Pokemon then I'm pretty sure Pokemon is still the bigger seller, and even if it wasn't it is no where near 5% - 95%. If you're gonna make numbers up at least make up ones that are kind of believable and not just ridiculous.

He's referring to Japan and likely referring to recent figures. We haven't had a major Pokemon in a while, whereas everything YW touches has been gold.

And it's not hard to argue that YW is more popular than Pokemon in Japan. IP sells better, has better TV ratings, etc.

Because it's new. Same thing with Digimon. And which show is still running CONTINUIOUSLY for 18 years. It's even more impressive with Pokemon. The writers are out of ideas for the anime. So everything is horribly recycled. But yet, still is not dead.

Just saw some recent rating figures for animes in Japan and Yokai barely made top 10. Not bad for sure, but doubtful that it will be as big as Pokemon.

Yokai Watch is pretty much always in the top 10 and often in 7th place.  The reason that's significant is that the top 6 anime pretty much never change.  No new anime is going to beat One Piece, Detective Conan, Crayon Shin-chan, and the like.  You're probably talking about the week that Pokemon XY's final episode edged out Yokai Watch by one place but that's unusual.

In terms of Japan only, I think it's fair to say that Yokai Watch is bigger than Pokemon right now.  Long run, I wouldn't bet on it, but who knows.

As far as the rest of the world, he's just trying to talk up his brand.  We have no idea if it's going to go over in the west or not.

I mean this in the kindest way possible, but Pokemon has been recycled with each and every season. There are small changes, but it's still the same formula. It largely doesn't matter as both shows are targeted at young children whom don't care about the complexity of the plot very much.

I think Yokai Watch has a chance of finding an audience here in the west, but beating pokemon? In a few years? No chance.

My (locked) thread about how difficulty should be a decision for the developers, not the gamers.

Why didn't that work for Digimon. And fell apart, at season 4. By this logic. All kids shows are incappable of being cancelled. Very few shows become an icon. The rest just die off. And don't have a real lasting apeal.
