The tech is there. The money is not. It won't take off until there are enough high quality software to warrant the high price, and that won't happen for years.

It is definitely an exciting step. Lots of creative people in games, TV, film are going to be able to make some great experiences with it. I'm not sure about the time frame of it reaching real cultural influence and importance, but it should fun watching the tech mature over time.

Take a dumb 20 something, he's in a gang. first time in jail for attempted murder and he gets VR treatment, to experience a scripted program that can change his/hers perspective of the world without endangering anyone else. This person leaves prison a year after being convicted, a new man/woman. Thats now possible.

I'll experience headaches, nausea and discomfort :p
Well I hope not, I've been waiting for VR for a long time. So long the game I wanted to play most in VR is no longer. (Wipeout) Luckily Driveclub is getting the VR treatment, GT as well. Apart from racing, mouselook finally arrives on consoles! Turn directly to what you want to look at instead of rotating. Headtracking is going to improve first person games immensely.
Plus everyone that keeps banging on the 60fps drumm should get behind VR asap. If VR gets popular, 60fps will be the new norm rather than the exception.

It will likely be price prohibitive to the casual consumer for the first few years but will become more affordable over time.

I'm looking forward to being more immersed in games but I think you're right in that it will go beyond that. I'm actually hoping someone will develop vr tourism apps as well. Visiting different places while still sitting at home. Or even visiting different places during different periods of time.

Still, I would like to try it myself before I commit to it.

Give me Miku VR

^ This.

I will happily wait for the price to come down/ newer tech created before even remotely looking into getting one.

Also, i think the first wave of VR games will be lacklustre at best.

Being too expensive now, it won't be very popular, but I can see it happening in the future..

This.

Its too expensive not only to develop but for consumers to buy. Why would consumers pay more than a PS4 for a system that doesn't have nearly as much games to play? Answer is they won't :P

Lot of consumers buy new iphone/samsung/etc every years, this cost more and add almost nothing, i think VR can be buy per a lot of gammer if they can test this and there is a few game who please them, enough for be successfull.

I am not really into racer, last one i played was on ps2, but i know a racer in VR will make me crazy & want to play this.

And like OP said, if they make travel VR experiance, imagine go in japan for 50 and visite there... or any country.... from my country for a 2 week orgaNIZED trips on japan this cost me 10'000$ so a ps4/VR will cost nothing ^^
