Forums - Sony - Guess the next PS3 price drop date

With US$ falling 10-20% of it's value during the past few months, I doubt Sony will cut the price of PS3 this year. Even though Japanese exporters are generally very good at hedging against their rising currency, it won't last too long (maybe 2-3 quarters). Sony's 2008 quarterly reports after Q2 are going to be pretty ugly.......

Sony's biggest hope to counteract this bad situation (weak US dollars) is the PAL regions because of their strong currencies. Will Sony cut the PS3 price ONLY in Europe like Microsoft? I don't think it is likely to happen. PS3 is no Xbox360 in NA and Sony cannot afford to piss off NA customers.

Nintendo is facing the same situation, like all other Japanese exporters.

It (PS3's market share) might hit 30%, but definently not more. ~ Neo

I think there will be one PS3 price cut this year. It could be $50-100, but a continued fall in the dollar would push it towards being a $50 one. It is in Microsoft's interest to force this price cut ASAP, and in Sony's interest to wait as long as humanly possible.

I think Europes price will drop in about 3 weeks and Sony will introduce a BC sku.

for MGS4 (Konami deal)
or later for E3
or even later for this fall

1 price cut, 100 $/euros

For the moment, PS3 doesnt need to drop her price in NA : no Xbox360 price cut + BR on the PS3. and since the console is selling in PAL ... it is ok.

Time to Work !

A £25(35Euros,$40-50) price cut on April 21st.

To come into effect on April 28th.

Although unlikely.

After or on E3 more likely and £50 to match 360 Elite in Europe and UK.

Hmm, pie.

i think early 09. there's a metal gear bundle coming and they won't price cut during the fall. either august or early (marchish) 09.

I think before christmas. It makes sense, big 100 dollar drop, that would only make it 50 dollars more than the wii!

PS3 price cut = June 12 2008 with MGS 4 launch. PS3 is really expensive in Australia at $700 - $650 US for a lousy 40GB model PS3. That should of been the starting price of the 60GB PS3 model when it released over here. Aussies get ripped off by all three companies, its a joke.

Thank you for being objective. Current US buyers already have received a major price cut due to currency. For a $399 price point, Sony receives nearly 8000 yen less compared to last year due to currency alone. That's almost an $80 price cut.

If the currency continues to fall does anyone expect another $100 price cut? A $100 price cut would mean that they would get nearly  18000 yen less from the 2007 price.

$180 price cut in less than a year, that would be a tough pill to swallow.

So I guess according to Joe there will be no PS3 price cut in the near future.
