Forums - Microsoft - Microsoft stops disclosing Xbox shipment numbers.

I thought this granted its own thread.

So now that Microsoft has stopped disclosing Xbox shipment numbers, we have lost the most reliable source of information for sales numbers. Yes, they used to report "Xbox family" numbers and yes, shipments = / = sales. But shipments were still the best thing we had to try and guess WW sales numbers. And let's be honest, VGC won't even be close to real numbers without some solid data (not that they care much about the numbers these days).

So I guess we'll have to pray that we always get NPD numbers leaked, and apply a rough ration (US = 60% of sales?).

What are your thoughts on this move? The reasons behind it, what it means to us or VGC, etc.

i like this move, because it set the world on fire (on gamining forums), but no1 else really does care
sony stopped to report ps3 and vita unit numbers. ms stopped to report xbox unit numbers
ea stopped giving unit numbers a long time ago and beside some major milestones, most ohther publisher do, too

the transition is real. unit numbers are metrics of the past. engagement is the future indicator :D

Sucks for everyone that enjoys analyzing sales, I miss the console race last gen, was so interesting to see all 3 do well. We've had a pretty clear winner from the get-go this gen.

Now that the PS4 entered beast mode they've been scared. I mean Nintendo still does it for crying out loud.

Nintendo even reported negative shipments one quarter!

But that's only because Nintendo is nothing but a game company. Microsoft shareholders really don't care about XBOX details so removing them is fine.

That's true, Nintendo is a true video game company, they don't have a choice. MS should still report them for us nerds

Judging from the info we got, we can mostly work out how many XBOs were shipped anyway. About 1.9 million.

make sure they won't even after X1 become the best selling console...

Shipments aren't financial numbers so Nintendo too has a choice on revealing them, but they choose disclosure for the benefit of shareholders.  Nintendo has been a publicly listed company since 1962 and is well known for their detailed and transparent Financial reports.  Even Playing Card revenue is still being reported by Nintendo in the FY.

And  Microsoft shareholders should care about Xbox financial details because more information is always better for shareholders, especially for a segment that big.  It's just that if MS revealed hard numbers for Revenue and Operating Income for the separate Xbox segments more people would be asking for a Spin Off again.
