In this case, isn't this just a demo..? Why give it a different name?

My best guess is for marketing purposes. It was generally sparked in direct comparison with the free-to-play system because it seems much more appealing due to the fact that it is much more accurate branding. Whereas free-to-play has become synonymous with pay-2-win and so forth, free-to-start can be easily be perceived as a means to have satisfactory quality content before you buy the full game. By all means it is really just a demo. However, it bears the slight deviation that you are always guaranteed to be able to immediately buy the full game at any time under the free-to-start name. Kind of like all thumbs are fingers but not all fingers are thumbs. I would put more recent beta access games in the same category as a demo, but that's really much opinionated viewpoint imo.

Actually no its not a 'demo'. A demo is something that may not be representive of the final product, changes for the better or worse may be applied to final product

This is literally the first few chapters in there finished form, to try, before you buy

Kinda like a demo but not

u can do dat with the ps3 and the ps4. there are plenty of games that you can download (the whole game) to play for a few hours and then, if you like it, you can buy the key to unlock them. ITs called full game trial

Isn't free-to-start what Nintendo calls its free to play games? I think they used it with pokemon shuffle, as well as their future mobile games...?

With Pokemon shuffle I don't recall. I think they mentioned it in a direct so I'll look it up, but I don't think they called it free-to-start. The only one I can really remember was with the newest Pushmo game. Mobile game-wise, I really have no idea what their plan is though I remember they said they would take a different approach or something like that.

EDIT: Couldn't find anything on Pokemon Shuffle, but I did find something on Pokemon Rumble World on the 3DS. Basically its as you said. Free to start has basicaly meant free to play.  Sigh...

I definitely should have double checked

This whole "demo" thing is out of control but it's my fault for not putting more thought into the op.

Yeah, some PS1 demos let you save your game. I played a few. Lots of episodic games give you the first episode for free. Some PS3 games let you test the game out for an hour. Several 3DS games like Rusty's Real Deal Baseball, Ironfall, and that new Pushmo let you try the game and then buy it if you like.

It's cool. Nintendo didn't make something new. Now my two big points:

1. You can play Fatal Frame right now!
2. More games (or every game) should do this!

Haha, I wouldn't say it's your fault. Nintendo chose to call this a weird name other than a demo, which sparked this side debate.

Yeah, that is how I feel when it comes to Ninten and free to start. It's weird and kinda confusing... x ) We'll just stick to their free to start...

It's not a demo.

Atlus does this kind of demo all the time. It's still a demo for the full game. Save data carries over as well.

Beat me to it.

I would try it but guess what, I don't have room on my Wii U.

I was planning to buy the game day 1 physically but then they announced it was digital only. So their loss.

This!

Plus they censored the game -   other than basic yranslation i don t want an "American" version of a japanese game-  that is part of what makes it unique

I don t even have room for the demo  and i already use an SD card for extra space

It's kinda clunky and not worth full price to me. Feels unpolished. Guess I'll wait on a sale.
