Forums - Nintendo - I think I've just found the perfect use of the 3D function - holding the 3DS sideways.

Is this a good idea?

Now, I may want to say that this involves holding the 3DS sideways, but this only opens the opportunities up to using more of the system's potential: using the touch screen, the underutilized SELECT button, the 3DS hinge, the gyroscope.

It's going to be really painful to view the 3D screen head-on, though. Just a warning.

You may have noticed how few 3DS games have the system held sideways - perhaps to take advantage of the 3D screen. But, I feel that there are possibilities that are missed out on here, the kinds of possibilities that made Hotel Dusk possible and would improve games like Zero Escape or various other games far more than just putting up an illusion of depth. Do you really need to have the background recessed slightly or to have the characters pop out at you?

Chances are, you don't.

But, what if you want to give more depth to the gameplay itself? Perhaps, an X-ray scanner that can be activated near-instantaneously, a way to auto-hide the HUD or text, a way to give your player the option to switch between two displays on the fly without the press of a button?

Enter the 3D screen.

By now, you should know that the autostereoscopic 3D display works by having two displays targeted at either eye, from one screen. This is best shown by holding the 3DS sideways with the 3D effect on - you can then see either of the two displays by tilting the 3DS relative to your eye level.

If you are following what I am saying, i am saying that we can use both displays - or streams - separately by holding the device sideways. Obviously, this isn't perfect - this is rather sensitive to movement, and the  - ̗̀new ̖́-  3DS throws a rather big wrench into this plan. However, this opens Nintendo up to theoretically not having to include the touch screen in the next handheld, and who knows what kind of "hidden content" you could put in your game if you utilize this! (Yes, you can just turn off 3D to turn off the fanservice, and turn on the 3D to turn on the fanservice - and possibly yourself. This also shields you aganst those pesky onlookers).

Now, this in itself (in conjunction with the proper 3D effect) should be enough to catapult the 3DS past the Vita in terms of being a fanservice machine. And why not? You can use the sort of X-ray effect you can get in a stealth game, too, you know!

Now, what about the  - ̗̀new ̖́-  3DS, you ask? Enter @DGW666. He makes NSFW 3D art.

Don't worry, his previews are safe for work.

In case you don't want to click through, here's the gist: you can (apparently) view 3D photos with a (sort of) 3D perspective in 2D on the X-axis. And, if I am correct, you can theoretically abuse the face-tracking software to let you be able to do the same, but with the Y-axis.

My point is, it's already being used for porn, may as well use it for games. Plus, you can also turn off the head-tracking to be able to take advantage of the innovations I've recounted earlier.

So, is this idea any good?

The only problem with that setup is actually playing the game. I'm not too sure how stable it would to actually play something in that position. It is kinda surprising how little experimentation there's been with the 3D function later in the 3DS' life.

Then follow young Mat whenever he calls,

Around 500 million casual gamers don't care, if you were being sarcastic.

Most non "touch based" games, have the same layouts as a physical controller.

The D pad on one side, and the buttons on the other.

So? They still don't care.
