Forums - General - Racist/Racism - Do we use these words in wrong situations?

But, you get male and female dobermans, and poodles.

Dogs are broken down into breeds based on their physical attributes.
Humans are broken down into races based on their physical attributes.

Race, in this sense, is the same word as breed.

This reminds me of the time when I tried to explain the difference between inoculation and vaccination.

In social sciences in europe the concept of race is used less often than ethnicity, sometimes they are used interchangeably. Still we use the concept of racism when we impute different people with different inherent characteristics like:

Albanians are thieves, or Jews are greedy

Even though Albanians and Jews are not races, it is still considered as "racism" to attribute people in that way. Maybe a better word would be "culturalist" or "ethnicist", but I guess the word has been used for a long time - and often in a North American context where discrimination has been between "real races" in another way than in Europe.

@Bursche

Races exist if we choose to use them as a concept to describe people, it's not a "scientific" term, it is just a classification that was/is used to categorize people, mainly out of colour. In an old anthropology book that I have, they divide humanity in four different races;

Europid
Negriod
Mongoloid
Australoid

I don't think that this classfication is used anymore in any serious research.

Nationalism and discrimination by location is different...

But colors essentially equal races...they are different, by the color of the skin as well as common physical attributes.

So that's what racism about, different colors. Of course blacks are no different than whites besides color, but that doesn't mean racism doesn't exist.

So it's not about race anymore but physical attributes? That's not racism if you bother people about physical attributes. That's just you being a dick and trying to piss people off (ie. making fun of...).

What I meant is ethnicity. My skin's probably similarly colored to a Japanese person, but their attributes are different.  Skin color isn't the only factor with race and racism.

LEFT4DEAD411.COM
Bet with disolitude: Left4Dead will have a higher Metacritic rating than Project Origin, 3 months after the second game's release.  (hasn't been 3 months but it looks like I won :-p )

@ libellu , SamuelRSmith )

dogs are a bad example - their "races/breeds" are close to being different species, because in quite many cases they don't produce fertile offsprings- definition of different biospecies is , that they can't produce fertile offsprings, like for example donkies and horses - they can produce offsprings (mules) , but those can't reproduce

and Samuel .. a breed is something totally different than a race, because races stem from undirected evolution, while breeds are deliberately made by humans with special purposes in mind

"""They are just different types or breeds. Like males are different from girls. Dogs are still one race in itself. There are just different types :3 They're not actually a different race.''""

==> soriku, u have to use a word as it is suppose to be used
u can't create a new definition as u want

human = 1 specy

black = white = asian = indian = arab = several races
that can be compared with the differente races of dogs that are below to the same specy : "Canis lupus familiaris"

And yes, Lafiel, breed are artificial race, they are made differently but it doesn't change the result : race = subpopulation of a specy.

I know it's a taboo in western countries

but i'm not white nor black and i'm dare to say it........................of course different races are different, some races are taller than others, and some races are more clever than others, if anyone dont agree with me you are lying to yourself

There are no races in humans.

A race is defined as being a group that are of the same species, but are genetically different enough that if you took a person from that race, and compared them with someone from the same race, and a different race, they would be more genetically similar to the other individual from their race.

However, in humans, if you take a white person and compare them with a black person and a white person. Theres an equal chance that theyll be more genetically related to the black person as to the white person. White people arent genetically similar, they just have the same skin pigments. They only share a few genes which determine certain physical attributes like skin colour and facial structure. They dont have any other genes in common.

Okay, so....... wut?

==> I see ur point.

I dont want to give an ultimate answer, because I m not sure of myself.

So I will just ask a question :

are u sure of your statement :
"""if you take a white person and compare them with a black person and a white person. Theres an equal chance that theyll be more genetically related to the black person as to the white person."""

any evidence ?

Because as far as I know, in addition to some physical differences, people dont share the same succeptibility versus desease (geographical situation ? education ? OR genetic differences ?) and also dont share some genetic tag (u can make genetic test to check from where ur lineage comes from).
For me, black people are genetically closer to black people and white people are genetically closer to white people (as a brother is closer to his brother than to his unrelated friend)
I think it is sufficient to think human races could exist.
