In social sciences in europe the concept of race is used less often than ethnicity, sometimes they are used interchangeably. Still we use the concept of racism when we impute different people with different inherent characteristics like:

Albanians are thieves, or Jews are greedy

Even though Albanians and Jews are not races, it is still considered as "racism" to attribute people in that way. Maybe a better word would be "culturalist" or "ethnicist", but I guess the word has been used for a long time - and often in a North American context where discrimination has been between "real races" in another way than in Europe.

@Bursche

Races exist if we choose to use them as a concept to describe people, it's not a "scientific" term, it is just a classification that was/is used to categorize people, mainly out of colour. In an old anthropology book that I have, they divide humanity in four different races;

Europid
Negriod
Mongoloid
Australoid

I don't think that this classfication is used anymore in any serious research.
