And, to be honest, there's nothing wrong with Magical Girl (and boy) anime like whatever this is trying to replicate. I loved Sailor Moon as a kid, and this game is still Rated M for some reason, so there's something there for older audiences. The soundtrack isn't as bad either when you view it from that point of view. But yeah, Atlus fucked up big time when with the way they teased this game two years ago. That is 99% of the reason it is getting shit, and it's completely their fault. Literally all they had to do was make the teaser more colorful and up beat and either call the crossover Persona x FE or make it more clear that the SMT was meant to represent the entire franchise by using characters from the spin offs instead of the main series. If the teaser was colorful, had a somber pop song, and used characters from Persona, Digital Devil Sage, etc instead of SMT 1, 2, 3, 4, and If, this fan backlash would never have happened. It's clouding people's impressions of what could end up being a really special game because of the failed expectations. |
Yeah, the production values are up there. The graphics have those techniques that don't quite give a "super crisp look" (also somewhat of a thing in Person 5 incidentally, I guess it's an Atlus thing), but the music and cut scenes are top quality as far as production quality. I think the style is just a bit more out there than people thought it would be.
And yeah, looking back now it's clear the initial teaser was super, super last second and made at a very early stage. Renaming this was the best move obviously. And I have a feeling a big part of the presumed M rating will be dark stuff with someone or multiple someones meeting a terrible fate, mainly because enough Japanese shows and whatnot have pulled that bait and switch before.
