@ stranne

Yes, the page was updated.

PS3 (40 GB) is still at 13, XBox Premium moved up to spot 26, PS3 GT5p bundle moved up to spot 51 and Elite moved up to spot 61.

Naughty Dog: "At Naughty Dog, we're pretty sure we should be able to see leaps between games on the PS3 that are even bigger than they were on the PS2."

PS3 vs 360 sales

You left out the most important point: nunchuck outselling PS3!

Unfortunately, this situation does not look very good for MS in the region. One of the models was just reduced to the magical 199 price point and the highest model is cheaper than the PS3 40 gig. I would have expected a much bigger increase on this alone. Especially in the only MS-friendly territory of Europe.

It was only two days of the price cut in effect, but most retail sales do occur on the weekend, knowing from working retail myself. Don't most stores have a price-cut guarantee as well? They do in the US. Generally, price drops are very top heavy.

The PS3, MS's unarguably absolute direct competitor, still managed a 6% increase this week, while other consoles decreased in sales. There was no negative effect on the PS3 this week.

Patcher predicted only a 20% long term increase for the European region after the price cut. I thought he severely underestimated this. Now it looks like he may have over-estimated the trend, if he's taking the entire European region into account.

Although GTA4 will be the absolute confirmation of what I said, I think the 360 is just going to try to have to outlast the PS2 in the region, so it's not a complete embarrassment for them. North America now looks like their only stronghold, where the PS3 has been gaining alot of momentum.

"Naturally the common people don't want war: Neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, IT IS THE LEADERS of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is TELL THEM THEY ARE BEING ATTACKED, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. IT WORKS THE SAME IN ANY COUNTRY."  --Hermann Goering, leading Nazi party member, at the Nuremberg War Crime Trials

This is somewhat of a disaster .

360 sales went up 170% when the last price drop ,a price drop that was smaller (50 euros vs 80 ) .

PS3 sales went up 178% when the PS3 40Gb was released (a 100 euros price cut but with less functionality ) .

This 40% is only for the days it has been efective so week to week sales must have risen some 25-28% .

The price drop has been announced and is know for two weeks now .

Last week data to wich this is comparing was low because people knew about the price cut .

The PS3 without price cut has seen a 6% increase too .

The rest of Europe is more indiferent to the 360 so the rise in sales may be even smaller .

All in all ,a positive news but that under the hood a disaster and the realizing that the 360 is doomed in Europe .

Speaking to GamesIndustry.biz, Chart-Track director Dorian Bloch revealed:

"As for the rest of the hardware market, Sony's indefatigable PlayStation 2 was a surprise star performer. "The greatest surge was on PS2," Bloch said. "There was a lot of price promotion going on, with certain titles being well and truly flogged. It's now the calm before the high point of Easter."

So it seems that surpisingly the PS2 got the biggest boost!

PS3 vs 360 sales

I wouldn't call this positive news, at all. Basically, for what it's taking out of MS's pockets the move simply wasn't worth it at all. They were getting beat by the PS3 when they already had a lower price, and this cut isn't putting them over the top. MS is pretty much done in Europe, and all they have left to do is push software out rapidly in the hopes they can recover some of their loses.

You do not have the right to never be offended.

@ ChichiriMuyo

Yes, Microsoft probably expected a major boost. However the low dollar made it easier for them to lower prices in Europe. (It also makes it harder for Sony to lower prices in the US)

@Mike

PS2 hardware was down, your quote is talking about a surge in (discounted) software.

I wouldn't use Amazon as a benchmark when stores are offering better bundled deals than they are.
