Sega's biggest failing in the last several years has been in making consistently good Sonic games. The track record has gotten so bad, some fans would rather see the series just die than struggle under endless half-baked attempts at reimagining Sonic. At this point, I think it's gotten difficult for Sega to find a way to move the franchise forward while paying proper homage to Sonic's retro heritage.
While playing Super Mario Maker on the eve of Freedom Planet releasing on WiiU, I began to think 'Wait a minute, even when Sega can't make a good Sonic game - someone else always can'. Sonic Maker is really the best way to make a good Sonic game.
While Sonic Maker wouldn't be nearly as popular as Super Mario Maker, it undoubtedly could sell decently well. Given the exclusivity agreements had with Nintendo over Sonic, the same framework applied to Super Mario Maker could possibly easily work for Sonic games as well. Nintendo probably would like to expand it's hold in this 'maker' genre, but it's other franchises like Donkey Kong, Kirby, and Zelda may not quite fit as neatly into that style. Given that many of SMM most popular levels at all ranges of difficulty are really high speed, Sonic is a proven natural fit for the 'maker' genre and what people seem to appreciate most out of it.
Think about it SEGA fans
I predict NX launches in 2017 - not 2016
