I'd go for Skyrim. Oblivion feels rather dated by now.

You don't at all feel pushed in on any given path in Skyrim (I didn't at least) and it's easy to lose oneself in the world (figuratively).

It sounds to me like you've put enough time into the games to know whether or not they're for you. Clearly, it seems they're not

I have many, many fond memories of Oblivion. But I truly feel Skyrim is a better entry point for getting lost in the game. It's just better put together. Now, it does look slightly dated now but if you are on PC with a fairly strong rig, that is easily fixed with mods. The Nexus mod sites have a ton of great overhauls for the aesthetics. Skyeim Flora Overhaul and one of the many HD texture packs plus Imaginator are all things I highly, highly recommend. Same goes for Oblivion but even the best mods can only make such an old game look so good.

You missunderstand, I didn't get to go any further in each game because of real world constraints. Oblivion on PC was borrowed and had to be returned, And when I bought it for console life got in the way pushed it back and it was forgotten. Same with skyrim altough play it was very, very fragmented through the 40 hours it just felt like I trtied a demo of the game because I never had the time to get any direction whitin the game world, 40 hours over 8-12 months.

I know i love the games, I now have the time to play them properly (until Fallout 4 arrives) but that said I don't want to waste my time putting 50 hours into the lesser of the three, I'm 15ish hours into ESO and I don't want to waste another 15 hoping it gets better.

In that case I recommend Oblivion, imo it is far better than Skyrim. The major quest lines are far more interesting and we'll written

I put about 20 hours into Skyrim and quit. I've restarted a few times on Oblivion putting into around 20 before quitting every time. I like the mechanics of Skyrim although enemies like the humans, skeletons, and dragons are too easy while other enemies like the troll, sabertooth, mammoth, and giant spider are too hard, constantly having to switch difficulty. The story dialogue and quest dialogue on Oblivion far surpass what I've played of Skyrim. Never finished either one.

If the next Elder Scrolls has as good of dialogue as Oblivion, the detail of the dungeons of Skyrim along with the better combat mechanics and hopefully a more balanced over world, then it would be the best in the series.

If From Software makes a new King's Field I'd rather play that than a new Elder Scrolls.

Damn son, we agree on something. I too believe Oblivion is a better choice than Skyrim. Seems the OP has decided his mind too. :P

Not really much for PC gaming these days, its out of budget but will 8gig DDR3 ram, i5 at 2.73gz and 1gig Nvidia Gefore 480 with CUBA run skyrim, smoothly, doesnn't need to be all graphical because I can play a pixelated game and adjust pretty quickly but I do need a certain fps, around 30 or higher? 64 bit on windows 7.

Bit late on this but yes, that would run Skyrim fine.  You wouldn't be able to go all bonkers with high res textures and all that but it would run it fine.  As for Oblivion, it should run very well on that.  Heck, you may (emphasis on "may;" Oblivion's engine isn't exactly a marvel) be able to install some nice visual upgrades if you are so inclined like Qarl's Texture Pack.  And Oblivion is quite good.  I will say that you should get all the DLC if you didn't already.  You can get it all for dirt cheap if you time it right.  Knights of the Nine is quite good, Frostcrag is a great and useful player home, and Shivering Isles is an amazing expansion pack.
