Plus, its very cheap.

some people buy it for rockabdn or guitar hero ( my teacher did)

it has 1000's of games that you can play on a 1304 system, not to mention it can be easily modded and games can be burnt

the people who made it (sony) have a good rep.

The previous generation's winner takes a long time to die out. That's how it works.

I'm under the impression most of the people buying PS2s these days are either getting it for stuff like Singstar, or as replacements for broken units, but haven't exactly got any numbers to back that up.

Lots of PS2s are being sold in Russia, Brazil, India and China, is why. Demand is way down in Japan and the US, mostly because consumers are starting to buy PS3s, but its huge library of games and DVDs means it's still a great purchase.

Yeah the PS2's 8-year anniversary was 2 weeks ago (launched in Japan March 4, 2000). Freaky.

Maybe people decide that they want to buy a PS3 but want the backwards compatibility so instead of getting the 80 gig they get a 40 and a PS2 and you are guaranteed able to play any game that has ever come out for the Playstation systems.

If we include the year 2000 that was when it was launched in Japan it is in its (2000,2001,2002,2003,2004,2005,2006,2007 and 2008 ) in its ninth year .

Well ,the console is cheap ,has tons of great games ,cheap library ,casual appeal (Singstar ,Buzz ,Eye Toy ,Guitar Hero ..) ,a lot of brandname and still some support behind it ....

I liked the PS1 better ,in fact I never bought a PS2 and only now I am playing the PS2 games through my PS3 ....but maybe the PS2 is the best gaming machine ever .

And compared to the NEs ...the NEs sold worlwide some 38 millions and for example in Europe its succes was very minoritary as the main console here was the Sega Master System (we are speaking about a very small market ,gaming was dominated by gaming computers as the C64,Amstrad CPC ,Spectrum and then Atari ST and Commodore Amiga ).
