The portrayal of Samus in the last Metroid WAS embarrassing, as a guy it was laughably lame and yes, sexist. They should have handled that differently. And yes maybe Peach doesn't need to get kidnapped like almost freaking Mario platformer game, that I can agree with too.

Really? Wtf?
You need something to trigger the adventure, it doesn't need to be peach being kidnnaped (and sometimes it isn't), but that's just as valid. What happens if Luigi is kidnnaped? It that ok? Or is it sexist too? Who can Bowser kidnap? Peach is a central figure in the world, kidnapping her gives you power over a Kingdom, makes sense. What kidnapping Luigi will achieve? Free plumbing? He sucks at that!!!!
Why ignore Goombella (a second-year co-ed student studying archaeology at the University of Goom), Lady Bow (leader of the Boos of Boo's Mansion) and Rosalina (protector of the fucking cosmos) and focus on Peach?
Now, i also dislike the last Samus, it was hardly the way western gamers picture her. Still, i think you are wrong. That was not sexist. Quiet is sexist! Walking around half naked for no good reason and showing her boobs to snake all the time. That doesn't mean all women (or characters), protagonist or not, need to be strong, independent and never feel anything about anyone (or not get sad if their felling are not matched).
To be in love and not be corresponded is sad as f***, it is ok (and normal) to be unhappy over that. Some people are shy, some people are cowards. Some feel platonic love.
The industry should not be restricted from any character archetype, from femme fatale to extremely shy in love, as long as it fits the story and world.
