Forums - Gaming - Need advice on a new Flat screen purchase

I am looking into a TV for a friend.  They are looking at the 32 inch range.  They have a Wii they are going to hook up to it and they will probably have standard cable hooked in as well.  I need some help tracking down a good TV for a low price.  Is there any advice you can give me for something that will look good for the use and not kill the pocketbook?

Toshiba makes great TV at very reasonable prices.

if you can't afford a 32 Toshiba TV, just stick with your CRT tv for now. :P

Sharp Aquos.

And don't hook up the Wii with standard cables, PLEASE. What's the use of a HDTV when you're going to use composite? It will look worse than on a normal TV. Use component cables and it will look awesome.

Sony. 'Nuff said.

I'm back...

Sony makes the best LCDs, but they come with a hefty premium. Right after Sony comes Samsung, then Sharp, and they are much cheaper. I'd definitely look into the Samsung LNs or the Sharp Aquos displays.

Hitachi are awesome too.

Tad pricey though.

do u have to go with 32"? consider going up to 42" plasma instead

ymmv, but imo lcd tvs don't look that good...especially the text and the edges of people and faces...some people don't notice, but i hate it, even on the top-end models

plasmas have a better picture, better colors, better viewing angle, better fast-motion performance than lcds...only size and price and weight and power consumption are plusses for lcds over plasmas imo...oh yeah, and if u have DIRECT sunlight right on your plasma constantly while watching tv, then lcds are better i believe in those conditions

also, longevity is no longer an issue with plasmas: u can leave it on for 8 hours/day for 20 years and only lose half the brightness (and do u ever turn ur brightness all the way up?)

Bets:Missed by 420k I bet leo-j vg$500 that wii will sell 31 million by 7/31/08.  Sorry, I don't think he has enough vg$ to make it with all of u that wish you could. Hit, with room to spare I bet kingofwale a 1-week ban that wii Americas ltd sales>360 Americas ltd sales as of the numbers for week ending 7/05/08 (using vgchartz homepage #s)

Predictions:

Wii will sell 18-20mil by 12/31/07  CHECKWii will sell 45mil+ WW by 12/31/08Wii will surpass PS2 sales WW by 11/17/11 (5yr anniversary)Wii Fit will hit 12mil sales in 2009MKWii+SSBB+Wii Fit+SMG > 50 mil sales by 2010 > gta4+mgs+gt5+ff13+haze+lbp

Wait for the sales and you can get a Flat screen TV on up to 48 months interest free terms.

Sony, Pioneer, Samsung, Hitachi and Philips make decent sets in those sizes, but in Philips' case you should be aware that they have seriously cut down on follow up and customer service and their TV's aren't the most longlived on the market.
If price is important, I'd recommend Hitachi, they also have good quality and nice enoguh specs for most people's needs.
All Tv's in that size (32") should be very cheap by now, they're hardly sold any more compared to bigger ones, you'll get a very good one for 300-400$ I believe, without claiming much knowledge about US hi-fi prices.

Avoid cheap imitation brands you get what you pay for in regards to TV's.
