Forums - Nintendo - So, what were your expectations on Wii U in regards of success?

So, what did you expect for the Wii U?

Success 18 10.47%

Moderate Success 71 41.28%

Proud Third Place 45 26.16%

Complete Failure 38 22.09%

Total:172

Kimishima, Nintendo's new President, predicted its failure. But what about you?

I have to put my hand in my heart: I was expecting success. At least 60-65M, nothing less than 50M.

But as time passed I went from 65 to 15M.

Predictions for Nintendo NX and Mobile

I always thought some things about it were questionable, but I predicted a bit more than Gamecube.

I perdicted people would hate the gamepad. But the 3rd parties drying up, harder than what happened on Wii, never. 50M was my original area.

... I think I said a ceiling of 40M and a basement of 30M. I argued quite strongly that the casual audience would not be back, both for Nintendo and Kinect. I was pretty certain it would finish third but still make a nice profit--at least, until the specs and price were announced and Nintendo's "controller only" marketing rolled around.

I was actually still somewhat positive at first because of Zombi U. I thought that we would get a lot more games, both third and first party, that made the game-pad look attractive.

I was not expecting nothing close to the Wii, but I though it would be above N64

I honestly thought it wasn't going to go over very well from the get-go. But I thought it would at least do better than the Vita.

I'll admit, at the time of the Wii U's reveal I was a Nintendo fanboy and was very optimistic over it's a success. I cannot recall what I had at the time thought of its success, I had just recently turned 14 at the time. More than likely I thought it'd reach 100 million easily due to the success of the Wii. But as time progressed I quickly realized that it probably wouldn't be the next "Wii". By around the 2nd month of the Wii U's launch I felt like 50 million was possible. By the time the PS4 was revealed I lowered that expectation to 20. Presently I'm betting on 14.5-15 million as the final total by the end of the Gen.

I thought it was gonna be Gamcube 2.0 from E3 2012 on, but it turned out to be something even worse.

After the runaway success of the Wii and DS it's hard to imagine many people predicting back in 2012 that the Wii U would sell less than 50 million. If I had made a prediction back then I definitely would have pinned the Wii U closer to the Wii than to the Gamecube and I would have been dead-wrong.

Expected it to sell close to SNES, but that quickly changed.
